CORPORATION OF OHIO.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 8, 1919.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Orro Koniostow, a citizen of United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to hinges and particularly to double hinges utilized for vehicle doors.
More specifically the invention relates to a double hinge structure comprising two mating pin and socket members, of which the socket member is provided with a pair 5 of sockets, each having openings in its side walls to receive a pivot pin, while the pin member has bracket portions extending into the sockets and engaging pins, the main strap portions, together with the brackets of the pin member, being formed from a single piece of sheet metal. The invention also relates to means extending to the outside of the strap of the socket member for withdrawing the pins The invention may be further briefly summarized as consisting in the construction and combination of parts herelnafter set forth in the following description, drawings and claims.
Referring to drawings Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the device as applied with the members of the hinge in closed position; Fig. 2 is a view in elevation with the parts open and looking toward the outer face of the strap of the socket member; Fig. 3 is a top plan view with the members of the hinge in closed position; Fig. 4 is a sectional view 'through the hinge and the adjacent parts taken on -a horizontal plane cutting one of the hinge brackets and the corresponding socket; Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the hinge open; Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank from which the pin member is formed after being blanked out and pierced; Fig. 7
is a view of the blank showing the end portions bent over to form the body portions of the brackets; Fig. 8 is a view looking at the outside face of the strap of the pin member: Fig. 9 is an edge view of a portion of one of the straps with the bracket attached, but before having its end bent into a plane parallel with the strap; and Fig. 10 is a similar view showing the end of the bracket bent around in place.
The invention. having been described with respect to the figure of the drawings, a complete detailed description will now be given of the detailed structure set forth in the said figures.
In the drawings 1 represents the main strap of the socket member provided near each end thereof with U-shaped sockets 2 extending transversely across the strap. The U-shaped sockets are adapted to receive the brackets of the pin member as will appear, and in the side walls and near the bottom thereof are suitable openings 3 for receiving the pivot pin 4;. The pivot pin of each hinge portion is secured to a clip 5 having an upturning portion (5 extending outward along the inner face of the strap 1. At the end the portion 6 is provided with an outwardly extending T-shaped guiding portion 7 adapted to pass through a suitable slot 8 in the strap 1, the T-shaped head engaging on the outside of the strap and the clip in its movement. The clip is held in position with its pivot pin in place by means of a screw 9 passing through the slot and into the clip, the head of the screw being on the outside of the strap 1.
It will be seen from the foregoing that when the socket member is in place and the part to which it is applied is properly mortised, the operator may remove the pm by loosening the screw 9 and moving the clip with the pin until the latter is free.
Suitable stops are formed on the socket member for the pin member and they comprise in each instance a pair of lugs 10 extending inward from the sides of each socket and across the end thereof.
The pin member of the hinge, with its brackets and other parts, is formed from a single piece of sheet metal and since the structure of this pin member forms a part of the invention, it will be described step by step as it is produced from the blank. The blank comprises a main body strap portion 11 having at the ends thereof bracket blank portions 12 extending outward in opposite directions from the main body portions. Each of these bracket blank portions is provided with perforated cars 13 extending diagonally from the bracket blank portions as shown in Fig. 6. Integral with each of the bracket blank portions is an end strap portion 1% spaced from the main body strap 11 by a slot 15 but extending inward toward the center of the piece. This blank is then serving to guide brackets at this stage are then formed so that they extend at right-angles to the main body strap 11, as shown in Fig. 9, and the end strap portions 14: are bent upward so that they are in the plane with the main body strap whereby the piece at this stage represents the structure shown in Figs. 8 and 9. The piece is then formed so that the ends of the brackets are bent around at the center,
so that they, with the strap, are substantially U-shaped in cross section as shown in Figs. 3, 4 and The holes in the ears 13 are then bored or reamed to receive the pin 4.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the pin member comprises a strap and hinge brackets formed from a single piece of sheet metal with the accompanying advantages of strength and lightness.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. A hinge, comprising a socket member having a hinge socket, a pin member having a hinge bracket,'a pin arranged inthe socket of the socket member and engaging the bracket of the pin member, a clip secured tothe pin and having a portion extending along the inner portion of the socket memher, an extension carried by said clip and extending through a slot in said socket member, and a screw passing through the slot in'said, socket. member and engaging in the clip.
' 2. A blank for the pin member of a hinge, comprising a main strap portion, bracket blanks formed integral therewith and ex.
tending longitudinally from each end thereof, pin receiving ears extending oppositely from the outer end of each bracket blank, and end strap portions extending toward each other inward from the bracket blanks and separated by'a slot from the main strap porliiion and lying in the same plane therewit a 3. A hinge pin member formed from a single blank of sheet metal and consisting of a main strap portion, bracket blanks formed integral therewith and extending longitudinally from each end thereof, pin receiving ears extending oppositely from the outer end of each bracket blank, and end strap portions extending toward each other from the bracket blanks and separated by a slot from the main strap portion and lying in the same.
plane, and comprising a strap including the mainstrap portion and the end strap portions arranged in the same planeand in longitudinal alinement, and hinge brackets of U-shape in cross section extending at right angles thereto and connecting the main strap portion with the end strap portlons.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature I in presence of two witnesses as follows:
