Be it known that I, CHARLES J. Soss, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the countyof New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges and `Methods of Making the Same, of which the following is av specification, such as will en- `able those. skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hinges and Vparticularly to what areV known as invisible hinges, and the invention consists in animproved method of making the movable or swinging part of such hinges, and particularly such part as shown and described in United States Letters Patent No. 1,078,703
granted to Charles J. Soss and Henry Soss,
November 18, 1913; and the object thereofV is to so form the swinging or movable part or arm of a hinge 'as to reduce the cost of manufacture as well as to produce a stronger part; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists inV the improved methodherein shown, described and claimed.
The invention is fully `disclosed in the followingspecification, of which the accompanying-drawing formsl a part, in which Y according to my invention and showing thethe separate vparts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:-

The part 10 and thedetails of construction thereof as shown and above described forms no part of this invention but is merely shown and described to illustrate one form of hinge or hinge butt with which the part or arm 11 which is the basis of this appli cation maybe connected.
` In the practice of my invention, orin the formation of thepart or arm 117 I cut from a suitable sheet of metal, a blank 17 such as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, said blank consisting of an elongated central shank or body portion 18 at the ends of which are oblong cross heads 19 and 20.v In forming the part 11 from the blank 17, I irst depress one end portion of the body18 adjacent tothe cross head 19 as shown at 21 in Fig. 4, and the opposite end portion of said body part as well cs the central portion Vof the cross head 20, as shown at 22, said depressions being of the general form shown in Fig. 4 and being made in opposite directions. s

In Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawing, IhaveV shown a slight modification which consists in providing oppositely projecting lflanges 29 on thel body part 18 of the blank V17 adjacent to the head lend 19 thereof, which fianges are adapted to be bent over the opposite side portion of said body part as shown at 30 in Fig. 8'of the drawingin the formation of the part or arm 11, and these anges serve to strengthen the body part 18 as well as to finish the opposite edges thereof.
In Fig. 9 of the drawing, I have shown another modification which consists in providing the body portion 18, or thev separate parts thereof, when in their fashioned position, as shown in Fig. 6 with a rib or corrugation 31, which will extend from the point 32 to the point 33 in Fig. .6 of the f drawing,and said rib or corrugation is indicated Vin dotted lines in said figure. As will Vbe seen, my improved method of l:' forming the part 11 consists simply in providing a suitable blank forming depressions at the opposite end portions thereof toreinforce and strengthen the same, bending the vblank approximately centrally there- .c of to form a bead or cylindrical bearingV member, fashioning the parts ythus connectedv to the desired form and securing the VVsame together by welding, riveting, brazing or otherwise, and .while I have showncertain details of construction for carrying my invention into effect, it will'be understood that various changesin and modifications 'of' these details may be made, within the scope Vof the appended claims, without departing fromr the spirit of my inventionA or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by VLetters' Patent, is
1. vThe tmethod herein described for forming the swinging member of a hinge from sheet metal which consists in providing an elongated blank comprising a central shank or body portion provided at its endsl with transverse cross heads, foldin said blank to ,br-ing said cross heads toget er at one end and to form of said blank an arm provided at the opposite end with a transverse cylindrical bearing, andse'curing the separate parts of the arm thus formed and the cross heads together.
'2; Themethod herein described for forming the swinging member of a hinge from sheet metal which consists in providing an elongated blank comprising a central shank or' body portion provided at its ends with transverse cross heads, forming depressions in the opposite end portionsof theshank or body portion one of which extends into the corresponding cross head, folding said blank to bring said cross heads together at one end and to .form of said blank an arm provided at the opposite endwith a trans-verse cylindricaly bearing, giving said arm the desired shape and securing the: separate parts of the arm thus formed and the cross heads together. l A

A swin ing hinge member formed from a suitable sheet metal ,blank, saidl hinge member comprising an arm portion at one end of which is a cylindrical bearing and at the opposite end of which is a cross head, said arm and said cross head being composed of a plurality of thicknesses of metal secured together to form said hinge member, and means for reinforcing said hinge member where the arm joins the cross head.
7. A swinging hinge member formed from a suitable sheet metal blank, said hinge member comprising an arm portion at one end of which is a cylindrical bearing and at the opposite end of which is a cross head, said arm and said cross head being composed of a plurality 0f thicknesses of metal secured together to form said hinge member, means for reinforcing said hinge member where the arm joins the cross head, and means for reinforcing said arm between the cross head and the cylindrical bearing.
8. A swinging hinge member comprising an approximately hook-shaped arm provided at one end with a two-part attaching member and at the opposite end with a cylindrical bearing, said arm and its attaching member being formed from a single strip of metal.
9. A swinging hinge4 member comprising an approximately hook-shapedV arm provided at one end with a single two-part head and at the opposite end with a cylindrical bearing, said arm and said head being formed of a plurality of thicknesses of metal secured together.

The method herein described of for1ning a swinging arm for a hinge from sheet metal which consists in providing an elongated blank comprising a central shank or body portion provided at its ends with attaching parts, and folding said blank to bring said parts together at one end to form a single attaching member composed of two parts and to form from said blank said swinging arm provided at one end with a transverse cylindrical bearing and at the opposite end with said two-part attaching member.

A swinging arm for hinges formed from an elongated blank of sheet metal provided at its ends with attaching head members and folded to bring said head members together and to form a single attaching head composed of two parts and to form an arm provided at one end with a cylindrical bearing and at the opposite end with said attaching head.
