UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. MOBEE, OF ATHENS, OHIO.
PEER-BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 12, 1921.
Application filed June 4, 1917. I Serial No. 172,677.
Athens, in the county of Athens and v tate of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Paper-Binders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of devices which permanently bind a number of sheets into volumes.
My invention has for its object to produce a very simple and inexpensive means whereby the user can do his own binding, and also to provide a device which will automatically lock itself in position and one which will be adjustable to various thicknesses of volumes.
My means of accomplishing the foregoing objects may be more readily understood by having reference to the accompanying drawings, which are hereunto annexed and are a part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a view of a volume bound with my invention, part of the leaves being broken away to show the operation of the binder.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the.
' device.
Fig. 3 is a cross section of the binder ,on line 33inFig. 2.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the entire description.
As shown in the drawings, the leaves forming the volume 3 are punched with holes of the exact diameter of a cross section of my binder which is formed in two parts 4 and 5, each'of whichis provided with a head 6, and are semi-cylindrical, the flattened portion being provided with a plurality of ratchet.
teeth 7 which are inclined toward the head, the two parts when the teeth 7 are in engagement, forming a round rod or post.
The operation of the device is as follows: Having selected the desired number of leaves to be bound into the volume, they are placed so that the holes punched therein, are
. in register with each other and one part of the blnder is inserted from the bottom and the other is started in the same hole from the top, when a few blows of the hammer will drive the post parts in until thehead 6 engages the outside of the volume 3. There is sufficient give in the paper to permit the teeth to pass each other, but it also exerts enough pressure to hold them tightly in engagement as shown in Fig. 1 so that they hold the leaves permanently and in fact, they can only be removed by cutting them out. As the ratchet teeth 7, extend from the head to the point, it is apparent that they will hold any thickness intermediate the combined length of the two parts land 5, less the number of teeth required to hold the leaves together.- Obviously, different lengths of binders may be provided for large or small volumes. 7
Having described my invention what I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1
In a paper binder, a binder post formed in two longitudinally divided sections having flat abutting axial faces provided with interengaging teeth for holding the post sections with a thin headed terminal overhanging the companion section, .said post being of uniform diameter throughout the interengagement-of said post sections. I
In testimony whereof, I have signed the foregoing specification;
TCHARLES F. MoBEE.
