ERIK A. AsrLUND, or'wiiurrnean, ILLINOIS.V
0VERSHOE-APLCATOR.
l Applicationled January 24, 1921. Seria1.No.439,i337. Y y
To all Iwhoa/L t may concern Be it known that l, ERIK A. AsPLUND, a. citizen oflfinland, residing at Waukegan,V in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overshoe-Applicators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a device to be used for putting on, adjusting ,or applying over-shoes to the shoes ordinarily worn while the latter are on the feet of the wea-rer, and is particularly. intended for use in connection with overshoes commonly known as rubbers, and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, combination and arrangement of the various parts thereof as will be hereinafter more fully setv forth and specifically claimed.
rEhe principal object of the invention is to provide a device of simple and inexpensive construction, yet strong and durable, by means of which the rear portion ofthe heel'stay of an over-shoe can bermly grasp dor clamped by members of the device, to the endthat the over-shoe may be readily manipulated with respect to the common shoe on which it is to be worn, so as to be readily placed on the shoe in which the foot of the wearerris incased, without wrinkling or injury to the heel stay of the over-shoe and withoutthe necessity of the wearer stooping down to handle the overshoe manually.
A further object 'of the inventiony is to so construct the device that after the overshoe has been put on the foot of the wea-rer thereby, the device can be readily removed from its engagement withv the overshoe. Still another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the device may be constructed of few parts, thus economizing in thelexpense of manufacture and rendering it an easy matter to assemble the' parts. @ther objects and advantages of the inven' tion vwill be disclosed' in the following description and eXplanation.- f Y In the accompanying' drawing 'which serves to illustrate an embodiment of lthe inventionf Figure l is a rear face view of the device showing the handle thereof shortened for the convenience of illustration and illustrating the parts in kabout the positions they will occupywhen the clamping members of the device are in engagement with the heel stay of the over-shoe. f Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional'view taken; on line 2 2 of Fig. l, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows, showing .by continuous lines about the position the parts of the device will occupy when engagingan over-shoe for the purpose of applying 1 t. to the foot of the wearer, and by dottedlines the normal positions of the parts.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan sectional view taken on line 3 3 of'F ig. 2 lookingin the 4 direction indicated by the arrows.
Like numerals o f reference refer to corresponding parts throughout theV diiferentV views of the drawings-` Y The referencel numeral 5 designates the. handle of the device which is hollow or tubular in formas shown in Figs. l and 2' ofthe drawing, and may be made of any suitable length, but by preference, ofsuch length as to present its upper endwhen the device is being used, va slight distance above the knee of the user, so that the upper' portion of the'handle can be grasped by the user `without causing him to. stoop ybut slightly. The upper end or portion of the handle is provided with linger rests @which to be more conveniently l engagedeby the.Y
lingers of the user than .if said linger rests were located at right angles to said longitudinal plane.` i
At its lower end the handle '5 is providedl with a rearwardly curved neck? .which isY substantially semi-circular or Ueshaped in,V
cross-section and said neckportionprovides a channel 8 whichextends downwardly and l y forwardly from the lower tubular ipart 9% of the handle as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. l 'and 2.of the2 drawing.
At its vfree or Vlower lend the neck 7 is` 'provided withl a transversely.. disposed clamping jaw or member/Quw-hichis seg--l mental in shape when viewed vertically and cut-away as at 10, thus producing depending legs cr extensions l1 at the sides o f said y jaw or member. Byreferenceto Figs. k1
by preference has its lower central portion and 2, it will be seen that the cut-away portion 10 or the j aw Q'terminates about midway between the lower ends or the extensions l1 and the upper end of'said i aw, thus affording an unbroken portion or the jaw to contact with the inner surface 'of the heelrstayv 12 of the over-shoe 13 which may be of the well known rubber shoe type.
Located at the rearV or outer surface or the clamping member 9 is another'clampingi'member 14 which i's curved to corref spond with the curvature' of the member 9 and like said member, is by preference made ot sheet metal. The rear clamping jaw orv 1 member lll is provided at its central upper Vportion with a rearwardly extended and upwardly deflected arm 15 which is also by preference U-shaped or semi-circular in cross-section, but or less dimensions than the neck 7 v The extension or arm l5 of the clamping member orjaw 1d is pivotally'secured between the 'sides of the neck v7 by means ora pivot 16 which is located in said sides near-but rearwardly or" the front or inner *gripping member 9. -Pivotally connected to the rear or upper portion of the arm or extension 15 is one end of a rod 17 which is'provided at its upper end with a Y handle 18 disposed transversely with respect tothe rod-17 and adapted to over-lie the linger rests 6 on theinain handle or the device.4 Connected at one of its ends vto the rear surface of the neck 7 near but above the pivot 16 is a spiralspring` 19fthe other end of which is suitably connected to they arm or extension 15 at a distance upwardly or4 rearwardly from the pivot 16 whichA unites the rear gripping or clamping mem` ber lato the neck17 of the handle. By this arrangementV it is obvious that normally the rear gripping member llnvill-be held in about the position shown yby dotted lines inY Fig. 2 of the drawing, by reason of the Vtension of thespring 19', and that when the vparts, are lin such positions, thegripping or fclamping members 9 and 1li can be placed astride the rear portion oi the heel stay-12 ldown and taking hold of the over-shoe with his hand ,in the ordinary or customary manner.'
lt is obvious that in the use or' my device, the iront or inner clamping jaw or member 9 in conjunction with the neck 7 or the handle to which it is joined will act as a guide A or chute :for the heel and rear portion of the common shoe or the wearer until the over-shoe is'properly.adjusted thereon, after which it is manifest that by raising the handle 18, rod 17 and rear clamping member 1A toabout the dotted lineposition shown in Fig. 2, the `device can be 'readily removed Ytrom Vbetween the common shoe and heel stay of the over-shoe, the cut-away portion 10 of the front clamping member or jaw permitting, such action. Y Y
Having thus -i'ully described my invention,.what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a device or the class described, the combination with hollow handle provided in its lower portion with a Aforwardly eX- tended vneck having its rear portion; open,.
ot a' concavo convex clamping member on the lower end or said neck and extended downwardly therefrom, another clamping member cu ved to correspond with thel curvature of Vthe first mentioned clamping,` member and having at its upper Vportion a rearwardly and upwardly extended arm pivotally secured to the'lower portion Yor said neck, a rod connected at its lowerl end to said arm above its pivotand extended Vthrough the hollow handle,l anda spring connectin the 'neck and arm above the pivot oi the latter. f
2. Vln device of the class described, `the combination with a hollow handle provided in its lower portion with a forwardly er:-V tended neck having its'rear portion sub-` stantiallyU-shaped in cross section, of a concavo convex clamping' member on the lower end or said neck and extended downw'ardly therefrom, another clamping member curved to correspondwiththe curvature i et oil the tirst mentioned clamping,` member and' located rearwardly or the upper portion thereof, the said rear clamping member hav-i ing' at its upper portion a rearw diy and upwardly extended arm substantially U- shaped in cross sec-tion, said arm' being l'llO located between theiwalls of the neck portion or the handle and pivotally secured thereto a rod connected at its lower end to 7 said arm above .its pivot and extendedv through the hollowhandle, and a spring connecting the neck and arm above tlie'pivot Vofthe latter.` i
