Description

-L. A. rFLEURY.
PNEUMATIC JACK.
APPLICATION vFILED APR.28,1919.
1,374,295. Patented Ap. 124,192.1.
N UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
LOUIS A. FLEURY, OF' INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
PNEUMATIC JACK.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr, 12, 1921,
Application led April 28, l1919. Serial No.'293,235.
To all whom# may concer/n.:
Be it 'known that I, Louis A. FLEURY, ai
citizen of the United lStates, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented' certain newv K' loosely retained between the two bases 5 and and useful Improvements in Pneumatic Jacks, of which the following is a specification. s
My invention relates to improvements in pneumatic 'acks of the character disclosed in Letters atent No. 1,295,471, issued to me February 25, 1919,'and consists in certain details of construction and arrangements of parts whereby I am enabled to produce such an article in a more simplified and 'conse quently less expensive form.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved jack structure showing its lifting chamber'in collapsed-condition; Fig. 2, a view partially in section taken on the dotted line 2, 2, in Fig. 1, andshowing the lifting chamber infiated; Fig.- 3, av pla'nv on the dotted line 3, 3, inF-ig. 1; Fig. 4, a hori- Zontal sectional view'looking in the direction of the arrows 4, 4, in Fig. `2; andFig. 5 is an elevation showing the lifting chamber in modifield form;
In said drawing the base'of my improved jack is indicated by the numeral, 5, to 'which base is secured a frame, 6, which may comprise a single or lurality of preferably arched standards, Where I employl a single frame member the same is provided with a central opening, but where a greater number are used I prefer to turn up the ends, 8, thereof and secure therebetween a sleeve, 9, in which opening or sleeve, as the case may be, I mount a vertical adjustable lifting member orv j ack; 10, provided at upper end with a seat, 11, and having at its lower end a base, 12. One or more of the sides of said lifting member may be lpro'- vided with a ratchet, 13, withwhich a pawl,
14, mounted upon the sleeve 9 'orotherwise, may be engaged. Between the frame base 5 and the base 12 of the lifting member l y insert a single collapsible chamber, 15, composed of any suitable material which may permit'of its expansion and collapsion and which is Aprovided with an air inlet and eX- haust valve, 16,' for the admission'and exhaust of air under pressure. In Fig. 2 I
- have shown said chamber 15 as spherical in form, andin Fig. -5 the same is spheroida] inI form, but I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to any specific form, as it will be readily understood that .l may employ a single chamber of any appropriate contour. or design for the purpose.
It will be noted that the chamber 15 is As in my former patent referred to, myv
improved jack in collapsed condition as in dicated in Fig. 1 is placed undery the vehicle or other object to be raised. Compressed air from any suitable source of supply is then introduced into chamber 15 through the valve, 16, which causes said chamber to distend and at the same time gradually `raise lifting' member 10, which latter in turn raises the object to which it is applied. To insure that said jack shall be maintained in positive position in its upward travel and thus steadily hold its load, the pawl and ratchet arrangement as indicated is provided as a means for accomplishing this,
but it will be understood any appropriate arrangement for the purposefmay be em' ployed. When it is desired to lower the vehicle the pawl or other retaining means isV released and the valve'l adjustedto per mit the escape of air from chamber 15, when thelatter collapses so that Imember 10, indicated in raised position in Fig. 2, is caused to assume its` lowermost position as shown in Fig. 1.
While -I have shown twol frame members for telescopically supporting the lifting member-10, it will be understood that one may be employed,`but by employing two or more, frame members they constitute in effect a cage for retaining the chamber 15 should there be, any tendency of the latter to become displaced through irregular motion or'accident.
I claim as my invention: 4
1. In a Huid actuated jack, a base, an archshaped Aframesecured thereto, a lifting member, movably mounted in said frame, and a flexible chamber for supporting and actuating said member.
2.In a Huid actuated jack, a base, n frame constituting a retaining Vcage secured to said base, a lifting member movably mounted in said frame, and a fiexible chamber mount- 5 ed Within said cage between said base and member vfor operating the latter.
3. In a lifting'jaek, the combination, of u base, a' frame secured thereto,l zi single sub stantilly spherical collapsible chamber mounted on said base and Within Suid frame, 10
n lifting member extensibly and retractubly mounted in said frame and seated on said spherical chamber, and means for controlling the movement of said lifting member.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.` 15
