Abstract

918,327. Air cushion vehicles. PEDRICK, A. P. July 18, 1961, No. 25926/61. Class 4. A flexible platform for transporting bulk loads comprises a peripheral tubular frame F upon which is stretched upper and lower spaced sheets G of rubber or similarly flexible material, a further sheet K being secured over the top of the upper sheet G and wrapped round the periphery to extend inwardly over the bottom sheet to a point L. A plate H with an aperture J is attached to the upper sheet G and a further plate P is attached to the lower sheet so that when the sheets are in contact under load, plate P seals aperture J. A plurality of ball valves are arranged round the lower periphery and in operation air from a compressor mounted either on the platform or on a towing vehicle is pumped into the cavity formed between sheets G until the platform becomes inflated. Thereafter air escapes through the exposed aperture J and between upper sheet G and sheet K to escape at L, thereby forming an inwardly directed peripheral air curtain to develop and maintain a supporting cushion of air.
