Abstract

1,158,641. Air cushion vehicles. R. D. PARKHOUSE. 14 July, 1966 [14 April, 1965], No. 16100/65. Heading B7K. An air cushion vehicle comprises a base structure 1 formed with side walls 2 to form therewith a plenum chamber 5 supplied with cushion-forming air by a fan 7, the side walls being formed with rests or pads 13 to support the vehicle when not cushion-borne. A flexible, inflatable skirt member 12 is secured to each wall 2 in such manner that when inflated it extends below the wall to assist in containing the cushion and when deflated it collapses so as not to become trapped beneath a side rest. Ports 18 in the members 12 provide for inflation of the skirts by cushion air, though this may be done by providing ducts through side walls 2. The skirts may be double walled on their lower sides to resist abrasion and the skirts may be formed in individual contiguous sealed sections.
