Abstract

1,056,070. Air-cushion vehicles. HOVERCRAFT DEVELOPMENT Ltd. Dec. 5, 1963 [Dec. 6, 1962], No. 46166/62. Heading B7K. In an air-cushion vehicle, the cushion is contained for at least part of its periphery by a wall structure comprising a plurality of deflectable rib members depending downwardly below the lower part of the vehicle and spaced apart to form a series extending for the said part of said periphery of the cushion, each rib member having a stiffness in a direction normal to said periphery sufficient to sustain the pressure of the cushion when formed, cushioncontaining means extending between the rib members to assist in containing the cushion while permitting variation in the spaced-apart relationship of the rib members and stabilizing means separate from or forming part of said cushion containing means and attached to each rib member and providing a support tending to return said rib members to their positions before deflection. In Fig. I (not shown), each rib member 1 is flexible and is attached to the vehicle by a flexible connection 2 and adjoining ribs are connected by springs 12 which hole them in positional relationship, but permit them to deflect as they pass over obstacles. To contain the cushion a flexible membrane 14 is attached to the inside edges of the members 1. In Fig. 4 (not shown), each rib member is inflatable through a duct 5, the profile of the shins 4 of each rib being maintained by cords 3 and cushion retention is provided by inflatable bags 20, or alternatively by panels of foamed material. The base of each rib may be formed with an abrasion-resistant shoe and ribs which are inflatable may be formed at their bases with apertures to form fluid curtains, similar apertures being provided in cushion-retaining inflatable bags where provided. The ribs may be wider at the top than the bottom and rear and intermediate transverse cushion retaining panels may be provided in which air is blown over the convex surface of a curved member to develop a fluid curtain at the base of the member.
