IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR FILING SAWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,424, dated April 1, 1973; application filed January 24, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AZEL P. DURANT, of Athens, in the county of Athens and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Tool for Filing Saws, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and effective implement for holdin g the file, and for aiding the operatorin directin g its movement. The improvement consists, first, in combining with the file a carriage, which serves as a tool-rest for the file and enables it to be moved more readily in the same path while in use, and thereby greatly facilitate the operation, as hereinafter more fully described; second, in combining with the carriage a sliding head, which holds the file and enables it to be raised or depressed in a vertical direction without changing the horizontal angle of the file or lifting the carriage from the bench or table upon which it rests while in operation, as hereinafter set forth; third, in combining the carriage or tool-holder, the file and its handle, and the set-screw that passes through the holder and impinges upon the handle to hold it with the file at any desired position to suit the face of the file to the angle of the tooth, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device when in operation, and Fig. 2 a front elevation of the carriage.
The file A is secured to the handle in the usual way. A frame, 0, of suitable form, is provided with bearings that receive rollers D D at each side, and permits them to revolve freely. A head-piece, E, slides in recesses in the vertical face of the frame 0, and is held in place by cross-strips 0 above and below. The head-piece has a boss, E, projecting from its front side, and is bored through at the center of this boss to form a bearing in which the front end of the file-handle rests, and is secured thereto by a set-screw, e, passing through the boss and impinging upon it. A lip, 0, projects from the upper end of the frame 0, and serves as a rest for the finger of the operator, in order that he may better control the movement and operation of the implement.
In operation the saw blade is securely clamped between the jaws G G of a table, H, in such manner that barely enough metal is left above the face of the jaws to permit the teeth to be brought to a proper edge. The file-handle is grasped between the last fingers and thumb, and the index-finger is placed upon the projecting lip of the carriage. The point end of the file is held between the fingers and thumb of the other hand, and can be freely manipulated by the operator.
The carriage serves as a rest and support for the governing hand of the operator, and enables him to more readily move the file to and fro in the-samepath and at the proper angle. This angle can be marked in parallel lines upon the table to facilitate the operation, if desired. The sliding head-piece permits the file to be raised or lowered or its vertical angle changed to suit the work to be performed, and the handle of the file can be turned in its bearin gs to bring the face of the file to correspond with the angle of the tooth, and secured in such position by the set-screw.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the file with a rolling carriage that aids to support and control it in its movements, when constructed to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the file and rolling carriage, as above described, provided with a sliding head-piece, substantially as set forth, for the purpose specified.
