Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CATHARINE F. WARE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PROCESSES FOR REMOVING PAPER FROM WALLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No, 137,396, dated April 1, 1873; application filed January 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CATHARINE F. WARE, of San Francisco city and county, State of California, have invented an Improved Process for Removing Paper from Walls; and I do hereby declare the following description is sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to a novel process for saturating wall-paper so that it can be readily removed from the walls of a room preparatory to repapering them, or in order to apply some other finishing to the walls.
Preparatory to applying my process, I clear the room of furniture and everything else which is liable to be injured by moisture. I then place some suitable steam-generating apparatus in the adjoining room or other oonvenient'location, and, by means of a flexible pipe or tube, lead the steam into the room which is to be stripped of its wall-paper. Before admitting the steam into the room I stop all of the cracks through which the steam might escape and stretch a rubber screen or other suitable steamtight cloth across the door-way or opening through which the steam pipe or tube passes.
of labor required and accomplishing the work' in a much shorter space of time.
ltswill generally take from one to two hours to properly saturate the paper in a room, but of course the length of time required will vary according to circumstances.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The process above described for saturatin g wall-paper preparatory to removing it from the walls of a room.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal.
CATHARINE F. WARE. [L. s.]
