Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, PAUL on GUARDIA- CALMiaTns, engineer, citizen of the Republic of France, residing in Cayeux-sur-Mer, Somme, France, Villa lEtoile, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for the Transformation of Reeds into lVoven Fabrics Suitable for the Manufacture of Ceiling Lath-Work, Baskets, Receptacles, and the like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
In the application for patent name of Guardiaflalmtes the 24th of March, l920,-Serial No. 368371 was described a method and apparatus for the transformation of reeds into woven fabrics wherein the reeds in the raw state are disposed in a hopper whence they are taken one by one by a distributing wheel which causes them to engage successively and end to end between the peeling, splitting and flattening devices. After these different operations the various lengths of strip thus obtained are joined together by connecting members and wound upon reels which are subsequently employed in connection with the weaving looms.
This patent relates to improvements in the disposition of the apparatus, the object of these improvements being to obviate the use of the connecting members employed to join the different lengths of reed strip or band. For this purpose the previously peeled reeds are disposed vertically upon a platform mounted above the loom. The reeds are engaged at the upper and lower parts thereof between suitably spaced crosspieces disposed upon feed cables actuated by a weight, whereby the reeds are moved forward toward the axis of the weaving loom. The reeds are then separated and spaced in line by special devices which feed them successively between the splitting rollers then between the reed-opening cylinders, and lastly between the flattending cylinders, all three devices being'disposed directly above the loom. Upon leaving the flattening cyl filed in the inders, the bands formed by the flattened reeds are caused to pass within pivoted curved guiding members disposed in quincunx and actuated by the heddles of the loom, 1n such' manner as to obtain, as in the prlncipal patent, two sets of warp port ons which are alternately displaced to the right and left after the passage of each woof portion. successively and automatically through the preparing devicesin such manner as to constitute continuous warp bands which are employed directly in the loom without requirmg the use of connecting members, as set forth in the previous application above mentioned.
The accompanying drawings show the improvements above indicated.
Figure 1 is a side view of the upper part of the loom having disposed above the same the devices for transforming the peeled reeds into two sets ofwarp bands. Fig. 2 is a side view on a larger scale of the devices for transforming the reeds. Fig. 3 is a front view of the same. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a number of devices for feeding the reeds separately into the transforming devices. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the splitting devices. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the opening cylinders. Fig. 7 is also a plan view of the flattening cylinders.
Above the loom proper is disposed a platform 63 having resting thereon the lower end of the previously peeled reeds 1. The reeds have the upper and lower part thereof engaged between the cross bars 64- disposed between the upper and lower feed cables 65, 66. These cables which pass over the guide pulleys 67, 67 are connected together in pairs by a clamping member 68. To the lower cables 66 are secured the weights 69 Where by the reeds are caused to advance and to slide upon an inclined platform 70 serving as an extension of the platform 63. The reeds 1 are then separated and spaced apart by the selecting devices consisting of the corrugated elastic plates 71 which are given a reciprocating movement and are disposed upon an inclined plane in such manner that only a single reed can be fed at a time against the vertical guide 72 and between each pair of selecting members.
For this purpose the corrugated plates 71 are caused to move alternately in pairs in opposite directions (Fig. 4) the reeds being are brought forward; said plates are provided with shanks 7 3, 7 3 having engaged therein the arms 7 4, 74- secured'to the shafts 75, 7 5 which are actuated by the cranks 7 6,
76 mounted upon the shafts 75, 75 The cranks 76, 76 are connected with the rods 77, 7 7 which are actuated by the cranks 7 8, 7 8 mounted on a shaft 7 9 carrying the splitting members to be further described.
Above the corrugated plates 71 are dis posed the disks 80 provided with elastic blades 81 for taking up and separating the reeds in combination with the corrugated plates 71, and to cause them to descend in front of the guide rollers 82 which press the selected reeds against the vertical guide 72. The shaft 83 carrying the disks 80 is rotated by a chain 84 passing over the gear wheels 85.
The guiding and feedingrollers 82 are constituted by an outer rim connected to the hub by resilient arms in such manner that the reeds are readily allowed to pass through the device irrespectively of their thickness. Each of the reeds drawn along by a guide roller 82 is caused to engage between the individual splitting devices constituted by the circular knife 86 disposed between the rollers 87 and cooperating with a grooved roller 88 (Fig. 5) mounted in a forked support 89 the rod whereof 90 is submitted to the action of the spring 91, thus permitting the reeds to pass between the knives 86 and the rollers 88 irrespectively of their thickness.
The split reeds then engage between the rollers 92 and 93 provided for the purpose of opening the same (Fig. 6). The rollers 92 are mounted upon a common shaft 94, and
the rollers 93 are disposed in the forked supports 89 the rods whereof are submitted to the action of the springs 91 as in the case of the disks 88 of the splitting devices.
The reeds which are thus opened are then brought between the flattening cylinder 95 mounted upon shaft 96 and rollers 9'? disposed in the forked supports 89 having spring mounted rods. v
Upon leaving the flattening devices, the warp'bands 26 are brought within the clastic gnideways 98 pivoted at 99 which are actuated by the horizontal heddles of the weaving loom, 29 and 29 said guideways are dis posed in quincunx in such manner as to divide the warp into two sets which are displaced alternately to the right and left after the passage of each woof portion, as set forth in the above named patent.
The operation of the various devices for preparing the reeds as above described is effected by a shaft 100 which is actuated by the driving mechanism of the loom. For this purpose said shaft carries a bevel gear 101 cooperating with a second bevel gear 102 secured to the shaft 96 of the reed flattening roller 95 which also carries a gear wheel 103 transmitting the movement to the gear 10a mounted on the shaft 94: of the reed opening members 92 through the medium of a gear wheel The gear wheel 104 actuates in turn, by means of gear 106, a gear wheel 10'? mourted upon the shaft 7 9 of the knives 86'.

Apparatus for the transformation of reeds into woven fabrics, comprising a device for receiving vertically the reeds, means for feeding individually the same, means for splitting lengthwise the reeds, means for opening same, a cylindrical roller mounted upon a shaft and cylindrical rollers elastieally supported for flattening the split and opened reeds, and a device for feeding directly the Warp bands into the Weaving loom. 8. Apparatus for the transformation of reeds into woven fabrics, comprising a device for receiving vertically the reeds, means for feeding individually the same, means for splitting lengthwise the reeds, means for opening and flattening the said reeds, curved guiding members, and horizontal beams of the Weaving loom actuating said members to feed the warp constituted by the reed bands into the loom.
