Description

V. H. FRIER.
POST FULLER.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 14, I920.
1,373,609. Patented Apr. 5, 1921.
UNITED STATES VICTOR HUGO FRIER, OF WAKONDA, SOUTH DAKOTA.
POST-FULLER.
Application filed July 14;, 18-20.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Vro'ron I-I. Fnrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wakonda, in the county of Clay and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-Pullers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in post pullers.
An important object of the invention is to provide an extremely simple and efficient apparatus for pulling posts'from the ground without breaking or otherwise injuring the posts. To this end my invention consists in a relatively large drum adapted to be positioned adjacent the posts to be pulled and provided with means preventing its move- 'ment away from the post. About this drum a cable may be passed and attached to the post at or adjacent the ground and by pulling in the cable the post may be moved vertically without injury thereto.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device in use for removing a post from the ground, and
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a drum or pulley having a hub portion 11 and spokes 12, the hub portion 11 being provided with the usual center aperture within which is mounted a shaft 13. The ends of this shaft are formed with eyes 14 in one of which is secured one end of a chain 15. The eye upon the opposite end of the shaft is provided with any suitable means 16 whereby the free end of the chain 15 may be adjustably secured thereto.
In the use of my device the drum 10, which is preferably about 30 inches in diameter and at least 18" wide and slightly transversely concaved upon its periphery, is positioned adjacent the post 17 and the chain 15 passed thereabout and secured by the securing means 16 to the eye upon the opposite end of the shaft. A cable 18 is then Specification of Letters Patent.

secured to the post adjacent the ground and passed over the drum 10. A draft animal may be secured to the free end of the cable 18, and upon pull being exerted upon the cable the post 17 is approximately vertically shifted and accordingly withdrawn from the ground. It will be understood that as the cable 18 is tightened the chain 15 tightens upon the post as the base elevates the drum, due to the change, in position of the chain as drawn somewhat closer to the post, causing the pull upon the post to become more nearly vertical as the movement progresses.
It will be understood that I do not limit myself to the particular construction of pulley or drum hereinbefore set forth, nor to the peculiar securing means described, as these constructions are capable of varied changes, obvious in character, and I accordin ly may make any such changes without departing from the spirit of the invention of the scope of the sub-joined claims.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a post puller a drum pulley embodying the usual apertured hub, a shaft extending through the aperture of the hub, a flexile element adapted to be passed about the post and having one end secured to one end of said shaft, means for adjust-ably securing the free end of said flexible element to the other end of said shaft and a flexible element extending over said drum and adapted to be secured to the post adjacent the ground.
2. In a post puller a drum pulley having its peripheral surface transversely concaved and embodying the usual apertured hub, a shaft extending through the aperture of the hub, a flexible element adapted to be passed about the post and having its ends secured to the ends of said shaft, and a flexible element extending over said drum an d adapted to be secured to the post adjacent the ground.
3. In a post puller a drum pulley embodying the usual apertured hub, a shaft extending through the aperture of the hub and provided upon the ends thereof with an eye, a flexible element adapted to be passed about the post and having one end thereof secured to the eye at one end of said shaft. means for adjustably securing the free end of said flexible element carried by the eve at the other end of said shaft and a flexible element ex tending over said drum and adapted to be passed about the post and having its ends sesecured to the post adjacent the ground. cured to the eyes of the ends of said shalt, 10
4. In a post puller a drum pulley having and a flexible element extending over said its peripheral surface transversely concaved drum and adapted to be secured to the post and embodying the usual apertured hub, a adjacent the ground.
shaft extending through the aperture of In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my the hub and provided upon the ends thereof signature.
with an eye, a flexible element adapted to be VICTOR HUGO FRIER.
