Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1920.
Application le. .Tune $35, 1319. Serial No. 305,886.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, CURTIS D. MCCLEL- LAN and donn FLYNN, citizens of the United States, residing at YWashington, in the county of TWashington and State oit Iowa, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Figured Toy and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
T his invention relates to new and useful improvements in figured toys and consists essentially in the provision of a gallows and means for automatically causing the ligure to be suspended by a rope in the act of hanging, and in the provision of means for resetting the device.
Our invention consists of a simple device of this character having various details ot construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
@ur invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, torni a part of this application and in which:
Figure l is an elevation.
Fig. 2 is a side view and F ig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the trap resetting device.
Reference now being being had to the details of the drawings by letter:
A designates a board representing a target with a bulls eye opening B, and C is a gal lows having a lateral extension D at its upper end, and E are pulleys journaled upon the gallows and over which a rope F passes, and which also passes about a pulley H, and thence extends to and winds about a drum l journaled in suitable bearings in the rear of said board and the standard I. A weight L is fastened to said rope behind the board and said weight is adapted to cause a figure toy N, about the neck of which a slip noose is fastened, to be elevated as the weight falls. Fixed to the drum is a ratchet wheel Q, the drum being provided with a circumferential groove l adjacent to the teeth of said gear. The bulls eye S is mounted directly back of the opening B in the board, and upon a bar T pivoted at T and having a projection S at one end, with Va tooth tor engagement with the teeth of the gear wheel A cord T2 is connected to said bar and affords means whereby the same may be drawn back to normal posiion after the bar has been tilted when the bulls eye is struck.
After the bar T is tilted by the impact ot a ball or other object against the target, the tooth upon the projection S will be thrown out of engagement with the teeth 01"' the gear Q, and the weight secured to said rope will cause the latter to wind upon the drum and elevate the figure, about the neck of which the rope is connected.
lNhen it is desired to reset the device, the rope may be rewound upon the drum by pulling upon a rope W, which is adapted to cause the drinn to rewind and by pulling upon the cord T2 the device may be set ready for operation.
What we claim to be new is:
l. A ligured toy, comprising a traine, a board representing a target and having a bulls eye opening, a gallows rising adjacent to the board, pulleys thereon, a rope passing about said pulleys, a toy secured to said rope, a drum mounted in suitable bearings in said frame and about which said rope winds, a weight secured to the rope, a gear wheel fixed to the drum, a member mounted in the rear of said board, said member adapted to engage the teeth of the gear wheel, and means ,for releasing the same from the gear to permit the weight to tall and the toy to be raised and held suspended, and means for rewinding the rope to which the ligure is fastened.
2. A figured toy, comprising a frame, a board representing a target and having a bulls eye opening, a gallows rising' adjacent to the board, pulleys thereon, a rope passing about said pulleys, a toy secured to said rope, a. drum mounted in suitable bearings in said frame and about which said rope winds, a weight secured to the rope, a gear wheel fixed to the drum, a member mounted in the rear of said board, said resilient member adapted to engage the teeth of the gear wheel, and means for releasing the same from the gear to permit the weight to tall and the toy to be raised and held suspended, said, rope :fastened to.
and adapted to Wind about said drumv and pulleys over Which said second rope passes.
3. A figured toy, comprising a frame, a board representing a target and having a bulls eye opening, a gallows rising adjacent to the board, pulleys thereon, a rope passing about said pulleys, a toy secured to said rope, a drum mounted in suitable bearingsY in said frame vand about which said rope winds, a Weight secured to the rope, a gear wheel iXed to the dru1na bar pivoted at one end and a board at its other end serving as a bulls eye and adapted to be normally positioned back of the opening in said target,. and. provided. with a downwardly tending projection designed to engage the teeth of the gear, said druin provided with an annular shoulder upon Which the eX-
