To all 'w 7mm it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES P. BEACH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the town of Littleton, in the county of Grafton and State of New IIampshire,`
have invented an Improvement in Arbor- Presses, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to arbor presses, the object of the invention being to provide devices of the character specified which may be readily built up and as readily disassembled, and which are simple and economical in construction, and efficient and positive in action.
By way of example, I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention in the accompanying' drawings, wherein-f Figure 1 is a plan view of a removable base plate that may be incorporated in such a press;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the arbor press in assembled form and incorporating the saidfbase plate;
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing` the arbor press used in conjunction with a plurality of grooved supporting members supported on the base plate and with a grooved block on the operative end of the operating member of the press Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective view of one of such grooved supporting,` members:

Referring to the foregoing illustrative embodiment, the press includes a detachable base plate 1, preferably of hexagonal form and containing` a centrally disposed aperture 2. Adjacent the periphery of the base plate, the same is provided with a plurality of grooves or recesses 3, said grooves being here shown as disposed in alternate sides of the base plate 1 on the lower surface thereof. The upper surface of the base plate may, if so desired, be provided with a plurality of depressions or recesses 4 for containing the grooved supporting members 5 which will be hereinafter described in greater detail.
While the base plate of my invention may be incorporated with various devices to produce an arbor or similar press, I pre-fer to use the same with a device such as the gear remover described and claimed in my copending application entitled Gear removers, filed July 26, 1917, and bearingw Serial No. 182,847, having matured into Patent No.

The members 7 are provided at their inner ends with the projections 10 for engagement with the lugs 11 of a sliding member 12, slidably supported within a sleeve 13 forming` part of member 8. Passing through the sleeve 13, as by being threaded through it, is the operating member 14 of the press, the same consisting' of a screw having-the square end 15 for engagement with a wrench or similar tool, and the cone-shaped end 16, for engagement with the work.
It will be apparent that by sliding member 12, the ends 6 of members 7 will be actuated toward or away from each other through the mediation of projections 10 and their engagement with lugs 11 of member 12. In order to lock the members 7 in any desired position, as with the extremities 6 of such members in 3@grooves 3 of the base plate 1, I
' provide locking' means consisting of an operating` handle 17 which is threaded upon and secured to a bolt 18 on which are mounted a plurality of nuts 19, respectively threaded left and right h and upon the bolt 18. The arrange-ment is such that the manipulation of the operating; handle 17 acts to exert or release the pressure of the nuts 19, which are disposed in a recess in the sleeve 13, onor from the sliding member 12. @bviously any other form of locking member may be employed.
The grooved supporting members 5, which may be detachably positioned in the recesses 4 on the upper surface of the base plate 1, preferably comprise tl-shaped blocks 20 havinr; the grooves 21 in the upper faces thereof. The `grooves of the members 5 are positioned so as to be in alinement with each other and with the groove 22 of a V-shaped cap or head 23 which may be supported on the coneshaped end 16 of the operating member 14. For this purpose the head 23 is provided with the recess 24.
The manner of assembling and using the illustrative embodiment of my invention here shown and described by way of example merely, will be substantially clear from the foregoing description. The sliding member 12 is manipulated by means of pressure eX- erted on the operating member 111 to open or spread apart pivote'd members 7, the locking means 17, 13, and 19 being in open position, until the ends of members 7 may freely enter grooves 3 of base plate 1. The locking means are then actuated to lock members 7 in the desired position. rlhe press is now in assembled position and may be used in the well known manner by manipulating screw 14.
The arrangement of the grooves or recesses 3 with respect to the plate 1 and the operative extremities 6 of the gripping members 7 shown in the foregoing illustrative embodiment is of considerable practical 'advantage in that it permits the base plate and the parts carried by it to be supported lat and lirmly on the bench or support used for the press.
When it is desired to use the press for straightening bent rods or pipes, members 5 are placed on base plate 1, and head or cap 23 is placed on the cone-shaped end 16 of screw 111 so that grooves 21 oi members 5 and the groove 22 of member 23 will be in alinement, as more clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. With the pipe or other article to be straightened, here designated by reference character 25, engaging the alined grooves of members 5 and 22, the operation of the screw 14 in the well known manner serves to straighten the article 25.
In order to disassemble the device, the locking means 17, 13 and 19 are opened, permitting sliding member or sleeve 12 to be actuated to spread members 7, to withdraw the ends 6 from grooves 3 of base plate 1.
It is, of course, to be understood that my invention is not to be limited to the particular embodiment thereof, here shown and described or purposes of illustration only.
`What I claim is:
1. In an arbor press, a base plate having a central aperture and a plurality of grooves adjacent the periphery of said member, in combination with detachable power-applying means comprising a supporting member, a plurality of gripping members pivoted to said supporting member, an operating member associated with said supporting member, means associated with said supporting meniber and actuated by the same for causing said gripping members to approach each other, and means iordetachably locling said gripping members in position in the grooves of the base plate.
2. In an arbor press, a base plate having a plurality of grooves adjacent the periphery thereof, a plurality ot' grooved supporting members supported on one face thereof, in combination with detachable power-applying means comprising a supporting member, a plurality of gripping members pivoted to said supporting member, an operating member associated with said supporting member, means associated with said supporting member and actuated by the same for causing said gripping members to approach each other, and means for detachably locking said gripping members in position in the grooves of the base plate.
3. In an arbor press, a base plate having a plurality of grooves adjacent the periphery thereof, a plurality of grooved supporting members supported on one face thereof, in combination with detachable power-applying means comprising a supporting member, a plurality of gripping members pivoted to said supporting mem er, an operating member associated with said supporting member, means associated with said supporting member and actuated by 'the same for causing said gripping members to approach each other, and means for detachably locking said gripping members in position in the grooves of the base plate, said operating member being provided at the 0perative end thereof with a grooved block cooperating with said grooved supporting members.
