Be it known that I, ALFRED H. HUM- PHREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city,ccounty, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Heaters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in gas heaters. V

My improved gasheater is especially designed by me for use in fireplaces and I have illustrated the same in that relation although desirable for use in other'relations.

The main objects of this invention are:

First,'to provide an improved gas heater which is very efficient in the matter of heat radiation.

Second, to provide an improved gas heater adapted for use in connection with a fireplace in which the products of combustion are effectively discharged or delivered to the structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.

I "accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims. A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:

. fireplace provided with a flue 2. My improved heater in the embodiment illustrated comprises a base 3 having rear legs 4 and andiron-like front legs 5. The base is provided with burner openings 6. The burners, located below the base, are preferably those shown in my Patent #1245347, Nov. 6,1917, and are disposed so that their tips are alined with the openings 6. The side walls are provided with posts or uprights 9. The general structure and arrangement of these parts is substantially that shown in my Letters Patent No. 1,280,740, dated October 8, 1918. i

I mount a fireback 10 upon the base, the fireback having a forwardly inclined fluted face 11 with an overhang 12 at the top of the face. The top 13 of the fireback projects substantially above the overhang 12 and is of substantial body, the same being rearwardly inclined and preferably outwardly curved, as shown in the drawing.

llhe radiants 14 are arranged on thebase over-the openings 6 and against the face of the fireback. These radiants are tubular with foraminated walls and the front and rear walls converge toward the top. The

rear walls of the radiants are forwardly inclined to correspond to the forward inclination of the face of the fireback. The

front wallsof the radiants are also preferably forwardly inclined, the inclination, however, being substantially less thanthat of the rear walls, so that the front and rear walls of theradiants converge upwardly as stated. The upper ends of these radiants are under but adjacent to the overhang 12. The radiants preferably have inwardly projecting spurs or fingers 15 on their front and rear walls which project into the radiants so that the products of combustion passing upwardly therethrough are brought into effective contact therewith increasing the heating capacity of the radiants and the heat units absorbed from the products of combustion. These spurs are preferably staggered or alternately arranged as shown.

By forwardly inclining the fireback as illustrated and the rear wall of the radiants to correspond therewith the products of combustion impinge on the rear walls of the radiants and are reflected. more or less against the front walls thereof and, owing to the converging relation of the walls, this is continued well to the top, so that the radiants become incandescent for substair tiallytheir full length. The fireback becomes heated and the ,l1eat-..radiates wardl therefrom in a very effective manner. Hie overhang and the inclined face of the firebackboth serve to effectively direct the heat forwardly into the room well towardthe floor.

In use the rearwardly inclined portion of the top of the firebacl-z becomes heated and thisinduces a backward current in the products of combustion, so that they are discharged to the'fiue 2 instead of being discharged upwardly and forwardly into the room as I have lound to be the case in other structures even when positioned within a fireplace hav ng a flue. Some fireplacesare dummies or without fines, and my improvements in'an embodiment which I find very. practical. I have not attempted to illustrate certain modifications and adaptations which I have made as I believe the disclosures made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired or circumstances dictate.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters. Patent, is:

1. Ina structure of the class described, the-combination with a fireplace, of a gas heater disposed therein comprising a firefor-- tiallyfabove such overhang and being or substantial bony andrearwardly inclined so that in use it becomes heated and produces a back draft current in the products of cornbustion above the fire back, tubular foraminated radiating elements disposed with their upper ends below but adjacent to said overhang of said firebaclr, and burners disposed below said radiating elements.

2. A gas heater comprising a fireback of earthy material having a forwardly inclined face with an overhang atits top, the top of the fireback projecting substantially above such overhang and being 01" substantial body so that inuse it becomes. heated and produces a back draft current inthe products o1"- combustion above the firebaclz, tubular foraminated radiatingelements disposed with their upper ends below but adjacent to said overhang or said firebaclr, and burners disposed below said radiating elements.

In a gas heater, thecombination of a base, a fireback of earthy material arranged on said base and having a forwardly inclined fluted face with an overhang at the top of its face, loraminated tubular radiating elements disposed on said base with their upper endsbelowbut adjacent to said overhang oi said fireback and having con-- verging forwardly inclined front. and rear walls, the inclination of the rear wall being substantially that of the firebaclr, the front wall having a substantially less. inclination,

and burners disposed below said radiating elements.
