which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in car stakes, and more particularly to the connections between the upper terminals of the stakes, whereby the latter are maintained in position on the opposite sides of the car.
The invention has for its principal'object to provide a novel type of coupling between the upper terminal of the stake and the connecting chain whereby the latter is automatically detached from the stake upon the release and subsequent turning movement of the latter incident to the pressure exerted thereon by the carload of logs.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in thedrawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.

Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates the body of the stake which may be of any approved type being preferably squared at its lower portion 5 and is mounted in a releasable type of pocket 6. A' horizontal flat plate 6 secured in any suitable manner to the car body 12 is adapted to support the squared base of the stake when in its" upright position as. shown in Fig. 3. Although the specific form of the pocket does not form part of the present invention an approvedtype have been illustrated in detail in the accompanying drawing which includes a hinged keeper plate 7 which is maintained in operative position to support the stake vert1cally Specification of Letters Patent.

-The lower terminal of the stake is connected with a relatively short chain section 9 having the-end link 10 thereof provided with an enlarged terminal portion 10 permitting the chain 11 to be freely moved therethrough. The chain 11 is fastened to the side of the car body 12 adjacent the stake holder 6 and is engaged with the relatively narrow portion of the link 10 of the chain 9 to support the stake subsequent to As usual, the stakes are arranged in pairs upon the car, the stakes of each pair being ar ranged on opposite sides of the car and being connected by a chain connection 13.
Adjacent the upper end of each stake an eye bolt 14 is passed therethrough and is provided at the looped terminal thereof with a permanently attached ring 15. elongated and curved shank 16 of a hook 17 is secured to each end of the adjustable connecting chain 13 of the pair of stakes and the shape of said shank is suchas to permit it to partially embrace the upper terminal of the stake. The
16' lies in engagement with one side face and the outer face of the stake and the hook 17 thereof engages in the link 15 thereby establishing a strong connection between the chain and stake and preventing the latter from moving outwardly under the weight of the logs on the car. As clearly shown in Fig. 1, the beak of the hook 17 is directed outwardly in a horizontal plane so that as the stake turns, subsequent to being released, the hook is automatically disengaged from the link 15 thereby releasing the upper terminal of the stake and permitting the latter to fall down beside the car. The chain connections 9 and 11 between the lower terminal of the stake and the car prevent loss of the stake subsequent to its release.
In use, the stakes of the car are properly positioned in the holders 6 and subsequent to partially filling the car with logs, the terminals of the stakes are connected by the chains 13, the hooks 17 engaging in the links 15. Owing to the manner in which the shanks 16 of the hooks curve and embrace the stakes, a reliable connection between the hooks and links is established. Subsequent to applying the connecting chains, .additional logs may be placed upon the car. The stakes are released in the usual manner by withdrawing the pins 8 from the holders -6 and as the stakes fall downwardly by gray-M7,. ity they are partially turned owing to their connection with the chains 13 thereby automatically withdrawing the terminals of the hooks 17 from the rings 15. It will of course be understood that the squared haseofthe stakes will be prevented from turning before the keeper plate 7 is released. By this improvement, it is evident that the stakesare completely disconnected at their upper 'terminals from the connecting @chains and ofier no obstruction whatever to the dogs as the latter are rolled off of the car, while the weight of the logs is utilized to positively effect the turning movement ofthe stakes, by which action the automatic disconnection of the chains from the stakes is eifected. Furthermore, due to the fact that it is unnecessary to manipulate the connecting chains 13 during manual release of the stake, it is evident that the improvement adds to the safety of devices of this character.
The preferred embodiment of the inven- 7 tion is disclosed in the drawings and set forthin the specification, but it will be un derstood that any modifications withinthe scope of the claims may bevmade in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What is claimed is:
1. In a device of the class describecha car stake adapted for engagement in a holder, .a
connection for the upper terminal ofthe stake, and releasable, :flexible attaching means for the connection constructed and arranged to effect turningimovement about an axis longitudinal with respect to the I p tion adapted to partially embrace the 'tenmie stake by the pressure of logs thereon and to be disengaged from the stake ,upon turning of the latter.
2. In a device of the character described,
