Description

H. K. C. MAXSON.
CLEANING TOOL. APPLICATION FILED MAY 7. 1920.

UNITED STATES HENRY K. C. MAISON, NEW YORK, N. Y.
CLEANING-T001 Toall whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY K. .C. MAX- SON, a citizen of the United States, and a resi-' tion is to produce a simple, practical and inexpensive tool which can be used to advantage in scraping and cleaning the inner ends of spark plugs so as to remove carbon or other .materials therefrom, and the tool is to this end provided with a handle, and with blades extending from the oppos1te ends thereof, one of the blades being prorided with a hook-shaped scraping end, and the other with a sharpened end projection, and both being preferably narrow so that they can be readily inserted in the hollow end of a spark plug. Both the blades are made of flat metal, preferably tempered steel, so that hard carbon or other matter which adheres closely to the lu can be removed readily, and one or ot of the blades serves as a gage, and to this end 18 made of a width for at least part of its length corresponding to the width of the proper gap between the electrodes of the plug, so that by adjusting the points of the electrodes in such a way that the dlstance between them will correspond to the gage represented by the width of the blade, a ap of right width is had. While the too is particularly adapted, as will hereinafter appear, for cleaning spark plugs, and while this is its principal use, it is obvious that it can be used for very many other analogous purposes. In carrying out the invention the blades can advantageousl be made in one piece extending through 1; e handle and projecting from the ends, as will hereinafter appear.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tool giving an edge view of the blades, and
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the tool.
The tool is provided with a handle 5 which can be of any desired desi and of any suitable material, and exten ing from Specification of Letters Patent.

the ends of: thehandle are thin blades 6 and 7, the former being bent at an angle to its plane at the end as shown at 8, and the end edge is sharpened so that the hook thus forme can be used to advantage in scraping the surface of aspark plug, or other surface to be cleaned of closely adhering material. The other blade 7 is cut as shown at 9 at its edge, at an inclination of the axis of the blade, so that a narrow pointed edge is produced which can be used to advantage inpunching material loose or in other work of cleaning.
The bla es 6 and 7 can he advanta eousl made in one piece so as to extend t roug the handle 5 whichean be attached inany convenient way, and in order that the ban get a better rip upon the metal and ho d it more firm y, it is advisable. to corrugate a part of the blade material held in the handle, as shown at 5* in Fig. 1.
At least one of the blades should be made of a thickness corresponding to the desired width of the sparkgap of the plug, which is usually about /1000 of an inch, so that the electrode points when spaced the width of the blade will be the desired distance for a proper ap.
From t e foregoin description it will be seen that I thus pro uce a very simple and inexpensive tool which is compact, easily carried about, and well adapted to its intended purpose.
Attention iscalled to the fact that the handle 5 should be made of suitable insulating material so that in working around electric conductors the operator would not get a shock. I claim 1-- 1. A tool of the kind described comprising an insulating handle, and scraping blades projecting from the'o posite ends of thehandle, one of said bla es having a scraping ed e at the end thereof inclined to the engt of the blade, and the-other blade being bent at an angle to the plane of the blade to form a scraping book.

orme into scra ers.
5 4. A tool of tl ie kind described com ris HENRY MAXSON' ing an insulating handle, and a strip offlat Witnesses: flexible metal extending through the handle WARREN B. HUTGHINSON, and projecting from each of the ends thereof I M. G. ODONNELL.
