To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLIFFORD A. BOURNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Marking Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My device relates to electric marking devices in general, and particularly to such devices as are used manually to mark the operators signature or other devices upon metal tools and the like by means of the electric are caused by a constantly interrupted electric circuit.
I am aware that devices of such character have heretofore been known and used, but they have been of crude construction and inconvenient to use, because it is necessary to hold the implement substantially vertical when writing therewith in order that'the contact point may be normal to the plane upon which the writing is being done.
The object of my invention is to further perfect such devices so that the hand of the operator ma be held in the natural writing position whi e the contact point is normal to the surface upon which the writing is being done; to eliminate all springs and arms projecting beyond the handle which are in the line of sight of the operator, and thus interfere with the convenient use of the device-;'and to keep the contact point within the prolonged outline of the handle so that a cap may easily be applied to the device when not in use, and thereby the contact point preserved from damage.
I accomplish these objects by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a part of this application for Letters Patent, like characters of reference indicating like parts throughout the several views thereof, and in which:

within a handle 8, and the projectin end of said core 6 is beveled so that the en surface thereof will be substantially parallel with the surface upon which the writing or marking is being done when the handle is held by the hand in the natural writing position, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
A vibrating member 9 is provided and is attached at one end thereof to the handle 8, one portion of said vibratin member being bent to lie adjacent the and of the core 6 and substantially parallel thereto, as shown in Fig. 1. A contact point 10 is secured to said vibrating member at the free end thereof, and is disposed so as to be normal to the end surface of the core 6, and therefore normal to the surface upon which the writing is being done, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
One end of the magnet winding 7 is attached to the vibrating member and the other end of said winding is attached to a binding ost 11 mounted upon the end of the hand e 8, as shown in Fig. 1. A wire 12 connects said binding post with a battery 13,
and a wire 14 connects said battery with the object 15 to be marked.
An electric current is established from the battery 13 through the wire 14 to the object 15, the contact oint 10, vibrating member 9, magnet winding 7, binding post 11, and wire 12 to the battery. This current energizes the electroinagnet so that the vibrating member is attracted to the core 6 thereof thus causing the circuit to become broken at the point of contact between the contact point 10 and the object 15.
The breaking of the electric circuit causes a sparking at the breaking point which marks the object 15.
The moment the circuit is broken as above explained, the vibrating member springs away from the core 6 and causes the contact oint lOto again contact with the object 15, bus the circuit is reestablished, and the same cycle of operations repeated.
The operation is so extremely rapid that the effect of moving the contact point 10 over the surface of the object 15 is to trace a line upon said object by means of the rapid succession of said sparks.
As will be observed from Fig. 4 the point 10 is disposed within the produced outline of the handle so that a cap 16 may be applied thereon, said cap having a slot 17 therein to accommodate the binding post 11.
My device may be made of any size, and
constructed of an materials deemed convenient and suitable for a device of this character, and while I have illustrated and described a form of construction and arrangement of parts found desirable in materializing my invention, I wish to include in this application all mechanical equivalents and substitutes that may fairly be considered to come within the scope and purview of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having disclosed my invention so that others may be enabled to construct and to use the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an electric marking device, a handle; an electromagnet mounted within said handle and having a core projecting from one end of said handle, the projecting end of said core bein beveled; a vibrating member secured to said handle, a portion thereof being disposed adjacent said magnet core parallel to the beveled surface of said core.
3. In an electric marking device, a handle;
a contact point angularly disposed relative to said handle; and electromagnetic means to vibrate said contact oint.
