COMBINATION-TOOL.
State-of lllinois, have' invented a new and useful Combination-Tool, oi which the ol-Y lowing is a specification. Y
The instrument is designed for use by miners, blasters or others having 1 occasion to cut and split fuses and crimp afulminating cap on each fuse, preparatory to blast in g coal, or the like. j
The purposes of the invention are to provide an instrument which may be easily and eiectively operated; to provide improved means whereby the lfuse may be quickly and v easily placed in position for cutting ;.to provide means for securely holding the Jfuse while it is beingsplit; .to provide a detachable blade serving beth tocut and to split the fuse;Av to` provide an instrument so constructed and arranged :that the blade may be readily sharpened without detaching it from the instrument and without marring or otherwise injuring other parts of the instrument; to-provide means for opening boxes or thelike containing supplies of fuse or explosives or. other ma# terial; andto provide means for making a lfiple in a cartridge toreeeive the cap 'and se. i
The invention isillustrated in the annexed drawing, to which reference is herebyl made and will now be fully described and the novel features thereof will be recited in the claim. 5
l Figure 1 is a top plan of an "instrument embodying my. invention, shown inclosed position; Fig. 2 is Va top plan Aof the same instrument shown widely open in position for sharpening the blade; Fig.v3 is a vertical transverse section on the line 3.3. of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical transverse section on the line 4.4. of Fig; 1; Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse vsection on the line 5.5. of Fig, 2; Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse section on the line. of Fig. 2 and Fig. 7 is a vertical section on the arc 7.7. looking to-v ward the center of the arc. The same refer-` ence numerals designate the same parts in all the views.
The instrument comprises a holding inember 7 anda cutter member 8. The member 8 has a boss 9. rlhe member 7 has a central and the head of the screw 10. The screw 10 screws v Specification of Letters Patent.;
into the boss 9 and holds together bers 7 and 8 in such manner that the inem'- ber 7 will be oscillative on the boss 9. i'
There is a central longitudinal sawcut 13 Yin the member Y8, in which the -blade`14` is( fratenteu Mar. 29,1921; i

stationary. A similar longitudinal saw-cut 15 .in the member 7, in the same plane with! traction ofthe blade and also guidesv inward and outward movement of theblade.
retracted, Vthe Ybroken or damagedfblade may be withdrawn from the slit 13,V and another blade may be inserted and the screws mayA -the blade, admits of free entry and'fr'ee'rei y' then be tightened-to secure the 'inserted Y blade in place. i
,'A'cdjacent to onee'nd or" the memberS` is a crimper notch 1-7 spiralcrimpers 18ar'e preferably integral with thewall'V of the n notch. A similar notch' 19 in the member7 has a spiral crimper v20. v
Y rlhe notches 17 and-19 are complemental to veach other and cooperate to hold the 4cap thereinjwhen the-in`strument is closed as shown in Fig. 1; V andthe crimpers 18fand" l20V serve to crimpthe-cap on the Jruse to make-'a water tightuniongof the Cipwlth the fuse.
'i ilngthe member 7 elongated sloping notch 21 in such relationy to the blade that `when thejinstrumentis partly open', asindicated by dotted jlines Vin Fig. 2 the Jr'use mayslide fromthe "orward end of the in: y y
strument into the notch without strikingV My improved construction 'Y `theblade. Prior to'my'inve'ntion the v'prac- A longitudinal bo-re 22 in the member 7 I receives Lthe cut fuse and holds it sothat upon closing the instrument the blade 14 will split thatpart of the fuse which ism the bore. v e y The member 7 Vhas Va'handle 23fand the member 8has a handle 24. Studs 25 `on the respectivev handles support ya springV 26 which actsto move the handles awayf fromr each other vand the 'spring normally keeps v i is traversed by thestudl of the screw 29V tween the forward endsoiI the members i the members 7 and 8 in the relation to each other shown by dotted liiiesin F ig. 2, in readiness for immediate placing of the fuse in the sloping notch 21. f
In the member 7 is a screw-.threaded hole` 28 in which a stud screw 29 engages'.
ln the member 8 is an arcuate channel 30 which during the opening or closing of the instru-- ment. The channel is of such vlength that the stud will strike against the end .wall
of the channel when the instrument is opened by the spring 26 to the extent indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. Upon' retracting the screw 29 to withdraw its Studl .a screw driver.
in; the free ena f the handig 2e is a am@ bit 32 usedto bore holes` in cartridges to receive fulminating caps crimped on the respective cut-off fuse.
Operation.
` The bon-opener 81Vwill be used to openV the receptacles containing fuse, cartridges,
etc.; the instrument being held partly'openV by the spring 26, a fuse will be insertedbeand 8 and will beslid along the'inneredge of the member .7 untilthe fuse stops in the sloping notch 21; the handles 23 and 24 willY be pressed toward each other to cause the blade 14 to cut off a fuse-section of the .de-A
siied length; upon discontinuance of the p pressure on the handlesthe spring 26 will act'to spread the handles apartflom each other to again open the instrument; the
fuse-section willbe inserted iny the bore 22 and the handles will be operated to cause the blade to split that part ofthe fuse-section whichis in the bore; the fuse-sectionl will be withdrawn from the bore andv they cap will be placed around the whole end of the fuse-section;A the cap will be placed in the notch 19 and the -handles will be operated to causefthe crimpers 18 and 20 to crimp the cap on the fuse-section; a cartridge will betalren in hand and the bit 32 will be usedto bore a hole in the cartridge to receive the cap; and the cap will then be inserted in the bored hole in the cartridge.
It' it be desiredto sharpen the blade or to remove a dei'fective blade, the screw 29 will be retracted to withdraw its stud from the channel toV permit-wide opening ot' the instrument, and when the instrument is Vfully opened, the blade maybe ground, or
the defectiveblade Vmay be detached and an other blade substituted. Y
Having fully Y described -my invention,
what l claim as new and desire vto secure by Letters Patent is:
` A Claim.
The combination tool comprising a cutting and splitting menibei-liaving a handle provided with a terminal boX-0pener, a Jaw having la crimping notch, a longitudinal saw cut, a cutting and splitting blade-secured in said sawV cut; a holding memberliaving a handle equipped with a terminal fluted bit, a jaw having a forwardly sloping guide notch, a crimping notchcomplemental to the crimping notch of'said cutting and splitting member, a longitudinal bore' adapted to receive and hold acut fuse, a saw-cut extending ilongitudinally through said bore Yand', adapted to permit free movement of said blade in'said last named saw cut; and a pivot Vconnecting" said holding member with said' cuttingand splitting member;
- In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name at Springfield, Illinois,ithis 29th 'day of'Nov;, 1919.
