To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HAVY Q. R. Cnownnn,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Ellipsograph, ing is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide a device of the character named which shall be of improved construction and operation.
The invention is exemplified in the combination and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawing and described in the following specification, and it is more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Fig. 2 is a combined pen and pencil for use in connection with the instrument shown in Fig. 1 in drawing ellipses;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the manner in which the instruments shown in Figs. 1 and 2 are operated in drawing an ellipse;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing the spring spool for holding the cord which forms a part of the instrument shown. in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail showing a spring clip which forms a part of the invention.
It frequently occurs in the preparation of drawings of various kinds that it becomes necessary for the draftsman to describe ellipses, and in some kinds of work it is desirable that these ellipses be accurately drawn and that they conform to specified dimensions. The present invention provides an ellipsograph which, althoughsimplc and easy to adjust and operate, will accurately produce ellipses conforming to prescribed dimensions.

In a drafting instrument, a pair of supporting members adjustable toward and away from one another, an elongated pointed member pivotally carried by each of said a pporting members, a shoulder connected with each of said elongated members for 00- operating with a straight edge to arrange said elongated members in parallel relation relative to one another, and means for holding said elongated members against pivotal movement on said supporting members, said elongated members having indicating marks thereon to assist in setting the points of said members at a predetermined distance from one another.

A drafting instrument comprising a pair of supporting members pi votaltv connected to one another at one end thereof, elongated pointed extensions pivot/ally carried on the free ends of said supporting members, T-heads on said extensions adjaguiding a line tracing insaid pointed cent the pivots thereof, said T-heads being arranged to provide shoulders for coiiperating with a straight edge to set said extensions in parallel relation relative to one another, means for holding said extensions against pivotal movement on said irig members, said T-heads having indicating marks thereon adjacent said shoulders to assist in setting the points of said extensions ata predetermined distance from one another, and a cord having opposite portions thereof connected with said extensions adjacent their pointed ends and arranged to guide a linetracing instrument held against said cord.

A drafting instrument comprising a pair of spaced members, a cordhaving one end thereof connected with one of said members, a spring clip connected with the other of said members and frictionally and resilient-ly engaging said cord to hold said cord in fixed position relative to said memher during a drafting operation but arranged to permit movementof said cord when suflicient force is applied thereto for adjustment of said cord.
9. A drafting instrument comprising a frame having spaced'members thereon, a cord for guiding a marker having one end thereof connected with one of said members, a spring clip for yieldingly holding said cord in connection with the other of said members, and a take-up device for holding the portion of said cord on the side of said spring clip away from the portion thereof which acts as a guide for said marker.
10. An ellipsograph comprising a pair of arms pivotally connected to one another at one end thereof, pointed members pivoted to the opposite ends of said arms, means for maintaining said pointed members in parallel relation to one another, a device pivotally mounted on one of said pointed members in spaced relation relative to the end thereof and arranged to swing about the axis of said pointed member, a cord connected with said pivoted device, a spring clip pivotally mounted on the other of said pointed members and arranged to frictionally engage said cord, and a spring take-up for holding excess portions of said cord.
