Description
UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
ANDREW J. GOING, OF CLINTON, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-BALE TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,301, dated April 1, 1873; application filed February 26, 1873. 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW JACKSON Go- ING,0fO1iDt0n,1 11 the parish of East Feliciana and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Bale Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in a strip of iron or other metal provided at each end with one or more catches, constructed as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tie as it appears when in position on the bale, and Fig. 2 is a View of the tie spread out fiat.
My bale-tie is simply a strip, A, of iron or other suitable metal, near each end of which are two parallel slots, a a, extending from one edge inward one-half the width of the strip,
and forming between them a tongue, b. The slots at the two ends of the strip are on opposite sides, as shown in Fig. 2.
When the bale is pressed the strip A is passed around the same, and its ends put together with the tongues 11 1) extending in opposite directions, and one on each side of the joint, as shown in Fig. 1. This forms a simple yet secure and effective tie. There may be more than one pair of slots and one tongue at either or both ends, so as to accommodate the tie to different-sized bales.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within-described bale-tie, consisting of the strip A, having one or more tongues, b, at each end, with a slot, at, on each side of each tongue, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing l have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of February, 1873.
ANDREW JACKSON GOING.
In presence of G. O. GAYLE, 7 J. H. WHITE.
