Description

w. KAV/Im, BARBERS POLEI` APPLICATION FILED SEPT- l, i920.
Patented Mar. 29, 1921.
Ill.. n
0 Il OII-OIIOIIOI) UNITED STATES WLADIMIR' KAVAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BARBER S POLE.
Application led September 7, 1920.
To all to tem t may concern lle it known that l, llVLADiiiiiui KAVAN, a citizen of Moravia, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in llarbers Poles, ot which the following is a iull, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to barbers poles, and has for its object to providea collapsible pole adapted to be extended or raised when in use and contracted or telescoped when not in use or out et business hours.
rThe invention contemplates the provision oil means for counterbalancing the telescopic upper portion of the pole whereby it may be readily raised and lowered and held in any desired position. Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
The invention will be lirst hereinafter' described in connection with the accompanyingI drawings, which constitute part ot this specification, and then more specifically de- :tined in the claim at the end of" the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similaire'lierence characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure l is an elevation ot a barbers pole constructed substantially in accordance with this invention.
.lv-Fig. is a central vertical section of the same with the telescopic upper portion raised as in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an elevation ot the pole collapsed, and
4l is a central vertical section of the pole as shown in Fig. 3.
The pole is made in two sections both ot which may be constructed ot sheet metal or any other suitable material. The upper seetion l fitted to telescope over the lower section Q as clearly illustrated in the drawings. To counterbalance the sliding upper section l weights 3 are suspended on cords 4 which are passed over sheaves or pulleys 5 suitably journaled on the interior of the lower section l near the upper end thereof,
Specification of Letters latent.
Patented Mar. 29, 1921.
serial No. 408,418.
said cords being attached to the interior oi the upper section near its lower end as indicated at G in Figs. 2 and 4. When the top section l is collapsed, as shown in Fig. 4, the cords 4L lie between the inner surface of the upper section l and the outer surface of the lower section 2. The cords extend through slots or notches 7 in the upper edge of the lower section and are freely movable therein tor allowing the upper section l ot' the pole to be raised and lowered at will.
When the upper section oit the pole is raised it presents an imposing appearance calculated to attract the attention ot customers during business hours, but when collapsed the reduced length of the pole indicates that the shop is closed. The relative dimensions of the sections ol? the pole may be varied as may be found desirable. While two counterweights 3 are shown arranged at diametrically opposite points in the pole, it will be understood that the number of said weights may be changed without departing :from the invention. The construction. or equipment of the pole or either ot the sections thereo'l' may also be modified without omitting the counterbalanced telescoping feature of the invention.` l
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
ln a barbei"s pole, the combination with a lower stationary portion, of an upper tubular portion of greater diameter than the lower portion and adapted to telescope around said lower portieri :for increasing or diminishing the length of the pole, sheaves on the upper edge portion et the stationary part, cords passed over said sheaves and attached at one end to the telescoping part, and weights attached to the other ends ol" said cords and housed in the statiolutry portion :tor counterbalancing said tclescoping part, said sheaves and cords being housed by the telescoping` portion.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specitication.
W'LADIMIR KAVAN.
