Description

J. FREEMAN.
CALF WEANER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 15. I920.

gm j'fimm,
JOHN FREEMAN, OF GLENXUGOD, IOWA.
GALE-WEANER.
aeaasoa T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JorIN FREEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glenwood, in the county of Mills and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calf-Veaners, of which the following is a specification.
lhis invention relates to an improved calf-weaner, and has for its object to provide an appendage to be worn upon the neck and to project outwardly from the face of the calf to prevent it from drawing milk from the udder of the mother cow, said appendage to consist of few and simple parts so that it may be manufactured at a very limited expense, will not prevent feeding from the ground and will permit adjustments to be made for general use, corresponding to the size of the neck and head of the calf on which it is to be worn. The invention also includes certain specific features of construction found to be of advantage and to be mentioned hereinafter.
The invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as described herein and claimed, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein,
Figure 1 is a side view of a calf weaner embodying my invention and illustrating its use. Fig. 2 is a side view of the device on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a plan view and Fig. 4 is a front view of the same. Fig. 5 is a transverse section through one of the struts and the bow, on line 55 of Fig. 4, the scale being enlarged.
Referring now to the drawing for a more particular description, I provide a crossstrip 6 adapted to be disposed below the neck of the calf, said cro'ssstrip being provided at or near its ends with a pair of parallel struts 7 each having its inner side formed with a channel 8 adapted to receive an end of a bow or loop 9 of inverted U-shape, adapted to be supported on the neck and to be adjusted longitudinally of the struts 7, and to be secured thereto by screw-bolts 10 or equivalent keepers engaging in apertures 11 which are provided for the pair of struts, at intervals thereof.
The cross-strip 6 is also provided at or near its ends with a pair of forwardly projecting, parallel arms 12 having pins 13 projecting from their ends, each arm preferably having a slot 14 formed therein to open on its sides and provided with Specification of Letters Patent.

apertures 15 opening on the slot. Numeral 16 indicates a cross-piece provided with pins 18 projecting outwardly from its ends, said cross-piece being adapted to be disposed in the slots 14 of the pair of arms 12, above the nose of the calf and to be adjusted longitudinally of said arms, bolts or keepers 17, which are provided, engaging in the apertures 15 of the arms 12.
As thus described, the pair of arms 12 are disposed approximately at right-angles to the cross-strip 6, the cross-piece 16 being disposed parallel with said cross-strip, and it will be seen that since the respective pins 13 and 17 project forwardly and outwardly, they will operate to advantage to prevent drawing of milk from the udder of the mother cow, but will not prevent a calf from being otherwise fed and will not prevent feeding from the ground. Also the adjustable feature provided for the bow 9 upon the struts 7 is such that the cross-piece 16 may be maintained closely adjacent to and at a suitable distance forwardly of the head of the calf so that it will not engage or cause chafing of the nose, the cross-strip 6 being held closely adjacent to the throat or lower part of the neck for this purpose.
The cross-strip 6 preferably is chamfered intermediate its ends, as indicated at 00 (Fig. 4.) so that chafing of the lower part of the neck will be prevented, and since the endportions of the bow are disposed in the channels 8 of the struts, chafing of the sides of the neck will be prevented.
I have described construction in detail but do not wish to be understood as limiting myself in this respect, and changes in form, size, proportion and minor details may be made, as found to be of advantage, the scope of the invention being determined by the claims.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In a calf weaner, a cross-strip provided with a pair of struts each having a channel in its side, a bow in the channels adapted to be secured to the struts .at longi tudinal intervals thereof, a pair of arms having projections extending beyond their ends, said arms being mounted upon and disposed at right-angles to the cross-strip, a cross-piece having projections extending beyond its ends, said cross-piece being mounted upon and disposed at right-angles to said arms, and means to secure the crosspiece stationary with said arms at selected intervals of heir length.
2. In a calf Weaner, a cross-strip provided With a pair of struts each having a channel in its inner side, a boW in the channels and adapted to be secured to the struts at longitudinal intervals thereof, a pair of arms disposed approximately at right-angles to and mounted upon the cross-strip each having a projection extending beyond its end and provided with a slot, a cross-piece having projections extending beyond its ends, said cross-piece being disposed approximately at right-angles to and engaging in the slots of said arms, and means to secure the cross- 15 piece stationary with said arms at longitudi- J GEN FREEMAN.
