Description

Patented. Mar. 29, 11921.
x m R u N Q V k 5 Q ATTORNEY BATH-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 29, 1921.
Application filed September 13, 1919. Serial No. 323,610.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosnH-I C. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of West Brighton, Staten Island, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bath-Brushes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates more particularly to a class of devices for use by persons when bathing.
11y invention has for its object primarily to provide a brush or device designed to be employed by persons when bathing, and which is of a form whereby a cloth or other like washable pad may be removably applied thereto to allow the cloth to be cleaned as well as allowing persons when desired to use separate cloths, the brush being also of a type so that persons may also conveniently wash their backs together with other parts of their bodies. The invention contemplates mainly the provision of a back having a concaved face to provide two spaced extensions so that a wash cloth in the form of a strip may be supported on the extensions crosswise of the concavity of the back whereby the parts of the cloth on the extensions will serve as scrubbing members, and in spaced parts of the back may be single slots or pairs of spaced slots to permit the ends of the cloth to be disposed therethrough for removably attaching the cloth to the back.
Other objects of the invention are to provide on the back a handle for allowing the back with the wash cloth to be guided over all parts of the body of a person; to provide on the handle a retainer which is slidably movable into clamping engagement with the cloth for detachably holding it to the back; and to provide a brush of a simple, eiiicient and durable construction which may be made in any desired size.
With these and other objects in View, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and will then be pointed out in the claim at the end of the description.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an inverted plan, partly broken away, of one form of bath brush embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view showing a top plan of the back of the brush with part of its handle, and
Fig. 3 is a detail sectionalview, partly Lif agipentary, taken on the line 33 of The device or brush has a back 10 which is preferably in the form of a plate of substantially a rectangular shape, and one surface of the back i concaved, as at 11, the concavity being provided by correspondlngly bending the ends of the back transversely to provide two spaced extensions, as 12 and 13. Through the back or plate 10 in plosely spaced proximity to they extension 12 is an opening or slot 14, while through the back in closely spaced proximity to the extension 13 may be one or a pair of spaced openings or slots 15 and 16. All of these slots are disposed crosswise of the back, and both of the slots 14 and 15 are preferably somewhat triangular in shape, as shown.
Protruding from the back 10 over the extension 12 is a handle 17 made of a rod or bar to provide two spaced arms, as 18 and 19, having their free ends riveted or otherwise fastened to the back in proximity to the ends of the slot 13, and this handle is of a length so that when the device is used the back 10 may be conveniently guided over the back and over other parts of the body of a person by manipulating the. handle accordingly.
In practice an absorbent wash pad preferably in the form of a strip of cloth, as 20, is removably applied to the back by arranging the central part of the cloth on the free edges of the extensions 12 and 13 of the back in a bridging fashion across the concavity 11 of the back. One end part of the cloth ismoved over the extension 12 to and between the arms 18 and 19 of the handle 17, and this end of the cloth is removably passed through the slot 1a to and upon the concaved faces of the back. The other end part of the cloth is guided over the extension 13 to the upper face of the back, and this second end of the cloth is passed first through the slot 16, then through the slot 15. The cloth is preferably of a length so that its ends when passed through the slots will lap some distance upon the back, and so that its second end may be arranged between the arms 18 and 19 of the handle 17.
In order to further hold the wash cloth removably on the back, on the handle 17 is provided a retainer or clamp, as 21. While this retainer may be of any suitable type, the form illustrated consists of a bar or rod 22 disposed across the arms 18 and 19 of the handle, and on the end of the bar are two eyes or hooked shaped members 23 and 24:
encircling the arms of the handle. These eyes are of sizes to allow the retainer to be slidably moved on the arms of the handle toward and from the back 10, and after arranging the second end of the cloth between the arms of the handle, as above explained, the retainer ismoved into clamping engagement with the cloth. In turn the cloth will be removably held on the back against accidental displacement when the brush is in use, and by providing the extensions 12 and 13 on the back the parts of the cloth 2O resting thereon provide scrubbing members 25 and 26. Thus a bath brush of a simple, efficient and durable construction is provided whereby interchangeable washable cloths or pads are provided fol-utilization by persons when bathing.
In the foregoing description, I have'embodied the preferred form of my invention,
but I do not wish to be understood aslimiting myself thereto as I am aware that modifications may be madetherein' without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent r A bath brush, comprising a substantially rectangular plate having its ends bent in spaced opposed relation and the plate having two spaced pairs of openings, one opening c of each pair being approximately triangular, a handle protruding from the face of the plate opposite to said extension members,
and a clamp element 011 the handle, slidably adjustable toward and from the plate.
This specification signed and witnessed this 12th day of September, A. D. 1919.
