Description
MARY E. y(DB-OWILLL AND LA VAUGHN CBOJELL, OF CULBERTSGN, NEBRASKA.
KNITTI\TGNEEBLE HULDER.
Application led April l5, 1918.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, MARY E. CnownLL and LA VAUGHN CnownLL, citizens o'j the United States, residing at Culbertson, vin the county of Hitchcock and Intate of liebraska, have invented certain new and useful linproveinents in Knitting-Needle Holders, oi' which the following is a speciication.
T his invention relates to new and useful improvements in holders and more particularly to a device adapted to securely engage the opposite ends of a plurality or a single knitting needle, so as to afford a means ior securely holding the saine with .the points thereoic protected likewise forming means for connecting a set of knitting needles and preventing certain of the needles from being misplaced.
Another1 object ci the invention is to provide a device of this character which is easily and simply constructed, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very etcient in operation.
`With these and numerous other objects in view, our invention consists of the novel 'ifeatures of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be herein reterred to and more particularly pointed out in the specication and claiins.
ln the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a side elevation of the device, with the needles shown in dotted lines positioned therein,
F ig. 2 is an end elevation of one of the holders showing a cross sectionof the spring, and
l`ig. 3 is a longitudinal section through one of the cap holders.
ln describing our invention, we shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The numerals l and 2 designate a pair of holding caps which are adapted to be positioned over the opposite ends of the knitting needles 3 as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l
of the drawings, said caps being formed of any desired material, being of any design, and arranged so that the open ends thereof are oppositely disposed.
The caps l and 2 are adapted to be connected by a coil spring 4 which has its op- Speccaticn of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 225,634.
posite ends secured to the outer side wall ot each cap by a fastening nieinber 5 positioned therethrough, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3 oi' the drawings.- rl` his coil spring is of the expansion type and is shorter than the conventional size of knitting needle so that the spring will have to be expanded so as to position the ends of the needles in the caps carried hy the opposite ends ot said spring.
ln operation, when it is desired to secure a set oi knitting needles within the holding caps the spring is expanded and the needles positioned therein, as is clearly shown in F l of the drawings. The contraction of the spring will draw the caps tight against the opposite ends of the needles, and hence said needles will be securely positioned between the caps, and will 'orni a compact package that inay be carried in a minimum amount ot space. rl`he holding caps, by connecting the needles together, likewise prevent said needles roni becoming lost or Inisplaced.
This type of needle holding device is very simple in construction, but the advantages derived therefrom are numerous. lt forms a very eicient holder for securing a set of knitting needles when not in use, and likewise affords a protection against the sharpened points of the needles. Although the device is especially adapted for application on knitting needles, it is obvious that the same may be applied for various other purposes. rlhe spring' Zl may be adj usted to correspond approximately to the different lengths oiz needles upon which the holder is to be used.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of our invention inay be had, and while we have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, we desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart frein the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A knitting needle holder comprising hol- 10W caps for disposition over the opposite ends rof one or a plnmlity of knitting needles, aflexible connection only between said caps in the form of :t contractile coiled spring of less norma-l length than the needles to be mounted in the holder, the terminals of the contractile spring being bent to vforni eyes, and means extending through the eyes for securing the spring to the caps to hold the same upon the needle ends. 1-0
In testimony whereof7 We aHiX our Signatures hereto. Y
' MARY E. CBOVVELL f LA VAUGHN CROl/VELL.
