To all c0 hom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, Moonnnousn llIrrcI-IELL, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Quebec, Province of Quebec, Canada,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vire Stretching and Twisting Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention. relates to devices for stretching wires and twisting the ends thereof whereby connecting loops may be formed.
An object of the present invention is to provide a device of the character aforesaid, whereby the ends of wires may be easily and readily gripped so that they may be stretched and when so gripped connecting loops-may be formed at the end of the wires.
With the above and other objects in view whichwill hereinafter apear as the description continues, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described andparticularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings has been shown a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details herein exhibited, but the right is hereby reserved to any changes, alterations or modifications to which recourse may be had that come within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing the elliciency of the same.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the devic embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section taken at right angles to Fig. 3 and,
Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the grip ping jaws.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings wherein like and corresponding parts are designated by similar reference characters throughout the several views.
The device comprises a suitable stand or support 1 having pivotally mounted therein as at 2 a lever 3 and one end of this lever 3 gripping faces.
provided with a handle el. The opposite end of this lever isprovided with a pair of extension plates 5 between which is pivotally mounted as at 6 a band 8 and this latter is seated within a groove formed in the outer periphery of a sleeve? A bolt 9 connects the opposite end ofthis band 8 so as to grip the sleeve 7 or permitthe sleeve to revolve freely within the band 8. The gripping device comprises a pair of jaws 10 which when connected form substantially a cone-shaped block which may be seated within the sleeve 7. The upper ends of these jaws 10 are secured within a sleeve 11. by means of a bolt 12 and a suitable washer 13 encircles this bolt 12 and is arranged between the jaws.
i T hereis sullicient play between the upper ends of the jaws and inner sides of the cap to permit the jaws to slide slightly upon the pin 14;.
Tliepin 14: extends through the jaws 10 and a lever 15 is pivotally connected thereto. Arranged between the jaws is a coil spring 16 which normally holds the jaws in spaced relation and the lower inner faces of these jaws are milled as at 17 so as to provide The lower ends of these aws are each provided with an enlarged portion forming an annular rim 18. Then the jaws 10 have been forced togetherso as to compress the spring 16 they may be seated within the sleeve 7 as the rim 18 will be permitted to pass through the sleeve 7. When the jaws have been seated within the sleeve the pressure may be released and the spring 16 will cause the jaws to be expanded whereby their outer periphery will frictionally engage the inner periphery of the sleeve 7.
In stretching a wire 19 the device may be seated upon a suitable support 20 and one end of the wire will be placed between the gripping faces 17 of the jaws. By applying a force to the handle l of the lever 3 in a downward direction the sleeve 7 will be caused to slide upon the outer cone faces of the jaws 10, whereby the jaws will securely grip thewire and the greater the pull upon the wire the tighter the jaws will grip the same. hen it is desired to form a loop or twist the ends of the wire 19, the j aws may be revolved by turning the handle 15 and as the sleeve 7 is loosely mounted within In a device of the character described, a
support, a lever pivoted in ,said support,
plates forming a'fork secured to one end of said lever, a band pivotally connected in said fork end of the lever, said band having its ends adjustably connected, a sleeve having a groove in its outer side attached to the lever by said band, for rotation relative to the lever, a tapered block arranged Within said sleeveand movablevertically therein, said tapered block comprising a pair of gripping jaws movable to and from each other, a spring nornfally holding said jaws apart, 15 and a lever pivotally connected to said block, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
