Description

N UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
o IwILLE VINCENT nU'rRo AND ARTHUR s. BnRRoUGHs, 0F sPoKANE, WASHINGTN,
RECIPROCATING currar. Fon .1?RINarrive-Piwssns.`
/ 1o all whom t may concern Be it known that we, ORVILLE` V. `Dn'rno and ARTHUR S. BUnnoUGHs, citizens the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State` of Washington, have invented certain new and` useful Improvements in Reciprocating Cutters for Printinglresses, of which the following is a specification. e y y The present `invention relates to improvements in reciprocating cuttersand the subject mattei' of the present invention is par-` ticularly designed for use in a printing press of the web feed type in which the web, after being printed, is drawn over proper and. suitable rollers, and then the printed web is cut or severed into sheets by the cutter which is operated by the power applied to the action of the printing press, and the cutting device forms one of the units of the combined machine which involves several other features upon which separate applt cations for patent have been filed in conjunction with this present application.
The present invention involves a novel combination and arrangement of the knife or cutter-blade and its construction, and further consists in novel means co-acting with the knife for holding the webor printed paper while the knife is performing its function, all as will be pointed out and claimed hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings one complete example of the physical embodiment of the knife and its appurtenances is dis` closed, the parts being constructed and ar ranged according to the best mode so far devised for the practical application of the principles of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of so much of a machine to which my cutting device has been attached and with which it has been successfully used, as is necessary to illus trate the application thereto of the cutting device.
Fig. 2 is an end view, as seen from the left of Fig. 1,.parts being shown in section.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the cutter or knife, detached.
Fig. fl is a front elevation of the cutter blade and related parts.
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view of the cutter blade and holder, showing also the bed for the cutter or knife blade.
The blade or cutter 1 is preferably a sheet `Specification of Letters` Patent" Ittelllted iwal. 22, 1921-" A ppncanbn iea Aprn e, 1919. serial No. 288,544. i
or `flexible plate of high grade steel and provided `with the beveled and angular, wardly and inwardly inclined cutting edge 2, and` this blade is rigidly attached to the `knife bar 3, which is shown as a channel iron of suitable dimensions, spaced from the cutter blade, and located at the rear of the blade. Between the knife bar and the knife are spacers or spacing bushings 4; through which the screws 5 are. passed," the screws being arranged in pairs near the ends ofthe blade 'and near thc top of the blade. y Thus the central portion of the blade does not have permanent attachment to the knife bar in saine manner that the ends of the blade are attached, but a screw 6 is centrally located near the center of the knife and this screw passes through the blade and is threaded into the knife bar. Thus, in Fig. 3 especially it will be seen that the knife blade is dished or cambered horizontallv by the utilization of the screw 6, and ouf course the metal of the blade is resilient to allow 'for this condition, whereby when the knife blade cornes over the die block of knife bedi `7, theblade will have a shearing effect thereon and insure a close contact therewith, and the blade will neatly and rapidly sever the web lV as the printing press operates.
The knife bed B to which die block 7 is removably attached is supported transversely of the frame F of the feeding attachment, and a pair of feed rollers are shown at 8, 8 in Fig. 5 for the web as it passes over the bed 7. y l
Near its ends the knife bar is provided with a pair of fixed uprights or rods 9, if
which pass through the channel iron flanges and are secured thereto by nuts 10, and these rods are vertically reciprocable in the bearings 11, secured at the inner sides of the side members of the frame F, to operate the knife blades. The knife bar and knife are thus reciprocable in front of the knife bed and die block and they travel in a path fixed by the movement of the rods 9 in their bearings 11. The rods are connected` being the cutting or shearing stroke, and by cycle of the press, giving the web a chance to moverforward while the knife is still.
In someinstanees a weight is required in connection with the knife, for holding the webv or paper on the Yknife bed B while the shearing or Cutting operation is bein ael eomplished, and preferably this Weig t is carried Vand supported by the two uprights knife bed, the rods are free to pass through these perforations in the weight bar. The
collars are so disposed with relation to the knife bed, that when the knife is in uplifted position, the weight bar is supported on the collars above the knife blade, but upon the down stroke of the knife, the weight bar is f deposited yon the papervand knife bed and the knife continues its downward stroke, entering or shearing off the paper after the weight bar has been deposited on the web or paper and knife bed. On the up stroke, the two collars again Contact with the weight bar and lift it from the knife bed, thi` weight bar preventing the paper from eatehing on the knife and its movement limited to form a guard. and the web which is intermittently moved, is free to be drawn horizontally in Fig. 5 to present another sheet'- for cutting.
Claim- The combination with a knife bed, vertically movable knife blade, a knife bar, and guide rods fixed to said bar, of a perforated weight bar loose on the rods, supporting collars on said rods for said bar, and said weight adapted to rest upon said knife bed during the Cutting operation of the blade.
In testimony whereof we aix our signatures.
