To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUcUs'r C. Donnron, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook,and State of Illinois, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Covers for -PI1II1- ing-Cups, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention is concerned with pr ming cups for engine cylinders ete, and 1s designed to furnish such devlces with a sunple and inexpensive cover that is automatically opened or closed as the valve assoc ated with the cup is turned to open it or close it, and which can be readily attachedto such cups, if desired. i
To this end, it consists of a novel construction to illustrate which I have attached hereto a sheet of drawings in which the same reference characters are used designate identical parts in. all the figures of which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a valve employing my invention;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same;
.Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the valve partly opened and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the cover detached.
I have shown my invention as applied to a priming cup of an ordinary construction in which the cup a is formed on the upper end of the body I) of the valve, which has the tubular extension 0 with the lower end threaded so that it can be screwed in place. A passage cl, indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, extends from the cup through the body and extension. The body I) contalns a conical valve seat, indicated in dotted lines at e, and coiiperating therewith is the conical valve f, which preferably has the handle 9 formed integral therewith. An aperture h 7 through the valve f preferably stands in the closed position when the handle 9 is vertical, as seen in Fig. 1. The reduced end j of the valve is provided with an aperture through which is passed the cotter pin 70 cooperating with the washer] WhlCh engages the helically coiled expanding spring m the other end of which engages a washer or disk which engages the side of the body member 6. The foregoing is a customary and well known construction.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a detachable cover seen tion g, which has in perspective in Fig. 4, and which is preferably formed up from sheet metal,and has the circular cover portion proper n which is slightly concave, as shown, with its concavity a portion of a sphere withthe point of intersection of the passages d and h, as a center. An'extension 0 projects downward from the cover a, and an oflset portion p connects it with the por the function of the customary washer adjacent the valve body. It has a perforation 7, which corresponds in shape to the cross-section of the extension j, which may be any desired shape, except circular, and. which is preferably a circle with two sides flattened. This construction compels the cover to turn with the handle.
I preferably round off the upper edges of the cup, as seen at s, and the concave under side of thecover is so designed that it barely clearsthe curved edge 8, so that when the valve is closed, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, the cup is covered and thoroughly protected from the dust, or tend to get into it and to be washed down into the cylinder with the next priming charge. So long as the valve is closed, the cup is covered, and as soon as the valve is ,turned to open it it is uncovered, so that a single motion or movement of the valve is all that is necessary to prime it.
It will be noted with this construction that the valve can be opened by turning the handle 9 in either direction, which is frequently a matter of much convenience in looking them in contracted spaces.
While I have shown and described my in vention as embodied in the form which I consider best adapted to carry out its purposes it will be understood it is capable of modifications, and that I do not deslre to be limited in the interpretation of the follow ing claims, except as may be necessitated by the state of the prior art.
at I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a body having a valve seat therein, a passage therethrough, and a cup thereon with its top edge located in a single plain surface generally at right angles to the passa e therethrough, of a valve member rotata le in the valve seat, and a cover supported from the valve member by an arm and having its spherically concave under surface adapted to swing closely'over the top of the cup from either sidethereof. V
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a body having a conical valve seat therein, a passage therethrough,
and a cup thereon with its top edge located in a single plain surface and extending generally at right angles to the passage therethrough, of a conical valve member rotatable in the valve seat a helical spring on the small end of the valve member, a washer cooperating with one end of the spring, and a cover supported from the valve member by an arm and having its spherically concave under surface adapted to swing closely overthe-top of the cup from'either side thereof, thelower end of the arm cooperating with the other end ofthe spring, and
means for securing the-spring washer andsmaller end non-circular in cross-section, a
helical spring onthe small end of the valve member, a washer cooperating with one end of the spring, a cover supported from the valve member by an arm having an aperture in its lower end of the same cross-section as the small end of the valve member upon which it fits, said cover having a spherically concave under surface adapted to swlng closely over the top of the cup from either side thereof, and means "for securing the spring washer and arm in place on said small end.
4. As a new and useful article of manufacture, a cover consisting of a spherically concave disk having an arm extending downwardly thereform and provided at its lower end with a non-circular aperture. for the purpose described.
5. As a new and useful article of manu- 'facture, a sheet metal cover consisting of a spherically concave disk having an arm extending downwardly therefrom composed of two parallel portions connected by an oilset, the lower portion having a nolrcireular aperture therein, for the purpose described.
