Application filed May 27, 1920. Serial No. 384,620.
one form of my toy;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, the rotor being omitted;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail view, partly in section and partly in elevation, of certain parts of the toy;
Fig. 5 is a detached detail view, in perspective, of the rotor-shaft support;
Fig. 6 is a view in side elevation of a form of toy resembling somewhat that shown in Figs. 1 to 5, but being of simplified construction;
Fig. 7 is a detached detail view, in perspectlve, of the bracket portion of the toy;
Fig. 8 is a view of a form of bracket slightly modified from that shown in Fig. 7, and
Fig. 9 is a horizontal sectional view, on the line 1313, Fig. 6.
Referring, now, in detail to the drawings, and, first, to Figs. 1 to 5 thereof:
1 designates a base, which may be formed as a disk, apertured at 2 for the reception of means, such as nails, 3, for securing the same to a suitable support, herein shown as a post 4, and provided with a central, upward-projecting boss 5, having a ball-raceway 6, in which are disposed anti-friction balls 7.
Concentrically carried by the boss 1 is a tubular member 8, adapted to rotatably support a bracket 9, which, as shown, is stamped up from sheet metal, and provided with a pin 10 projecting into the member 8, at the top thereof. The bracket is provided with an angled terminal 11, and with an upward and outward-curved arm or elbow 12 integrally carrying a vane 13.
Rotatably supported in said terminal 11 and in the lower portion of the arm 12 of the bracket is a horizontal rotor-shaft 14, carrying a rotor 15 actuated by the air-current, the vane keeping the rotor always toward the wind.
Loosely encircling the tubular member 8, toward the lower end thereof, is a rotatable sleeve 16, resting at its lower end, upon the balls 6,'and having, intermediate its ends, a circumferential flange 17, to which are secured the angled terminals 18 of legs 19 of Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mar. 15, 1921; I
In operation, the air current will rapidlyi revolve the rotor 15, and will, also, by impact against the blades 20, cause rotation of the sleeve 16, the blades being carried around a circular path of movement.
It will be noted, by the construction de" scribed, that the bracket 9 is, by the vane 13, rotated independently of the sleeve 16 controlled by the blades 20.
The toy position where it will be subjected to a current of air, and the rapidly revolving rotor and the bodily displacement thereof, as'con trolled by the vane 13, and the rapidly re-- volving blades 20 will amuse persons, especially children.
Referring, now, in detail, to the form of device shown in Figs. 6, 7'and 9: As herein shown, this form of toy comprises a hollow rod 41 carried by an apertured plate 42 adapted to be secured to a suitable support, herein shown as a wall 43. The rod is provided with a lateral elbow 44, into which may be projected a pin 10 (corresponding to the pin 10 of the device of Figs. 1 to 5, previously described) and carried by a bracket-9' (corresponding tothe bracket 9 of said figures). In the bracket is rotatably supported a rotor-shaft 14', on which is 1'0- tatably supported a rotor 15'. The bracket carries a vane 13.
Fig. 8 merely shows a hollow rod 41', the elbow 43 shown in Figs. 6 and 7 being omitted- The rod is carried by the plate 42' adapted to be disposed upon a support, at right angles to the position in use of the plate 42 of the device of Figs. 6 and 7.
Having thus fully described my invenshould, of course, be placed in a v tion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: a
A nenmatieally operabletoy including a tubu ar supporting member; a pin loosely 5 projecting into the bore of said member; a
one-piece sheet metal member carrying'said pin, and bent at one end thereof forming an angled terminal, and bent intermediate its ends forming an outward cnrved elbow terminating in a Vane; a rotor shaft projectingthrough said terminal and elbow; and a rotor on one end of said shaft.
Intestimony whereof, I- afiix my signature. I
JOSEPH MESSINA.
