To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK R. HIGLEY, a citizen of the United *States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Liquid-Fuel-Feed Regulators.
My invention relates to improvements in automatic liquid-fuel regulating valves for steam boilers or generators and especially those of steam motor vehicles; and the objects of my improvements are first, to increase the flexibility of a boiler by providing a control of the fuel supply to it which is simultaneously and automatically responsive to both the supply of steam within the boiler, and the demands upon it; second, to decrease the lag of the boiler by making its rate of evaporation directly dependent on the load upon it; third, to control the fuel supply by a valve whose opening is regulated simultaneously by (a) the pressure within the boiler, and (b) by the instantaneous output of the boiler; and fourth, to make opening of the fuel valve dependent upon the opening of the throttle valve which controls the output of the boiler.
I attain these objects by employing the principle of the difierential in the device shown in the accompanying drawing, and described hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a quarter sectional elevation of a fuel feed regulator showing the details of its construction in accordance with my invention, and which operates in the following manner.
Boiler pressure is admitted through the pipe 2 to the chamber 1, and acts through the diaphragm 12 against the piston 3 which is balanced by the spring 7. Sliding motion of the piston 3 is transmitted by the rod 4 which is slotted as shown to fit the pin 11, and prevented from turning thereby. The pin 11 passing through the base of the casing 10 and also the screw 8, which is drilled to fit the pin on several diameters, secures the latter from turning and provides a means for adjusting the tension of the spring 7 The valve stem 9 is attached to the bottom of the rod 4 by a thread of suitable p1tch, and is given a rotary motion by lever 5, connected with the engine throttle so as to turn with it through an arc; thus tending to close the fuel valve 6 whose position with respect to the casing 10 is fixed, as the throttle closes.
Fig. 2 is an illustration of a preferred form of this connection and shows the throttle 16, throttle valve 18, and throttle valve stem 15, provided with a lever 17 connected with the lever 5 of the fuel regulating valve by the rod 1 In the manner described the fuel valve 6 1s governed by a compound differential actlon between the boiler pressure the spring compression and engine throttle opening; either a lowering of the boiler pressure or increased engine throttle admitting more fuel past the valve 6; and vice versa.
The differential fuel feed regulator automatlcally anticipates the load on the boiler as the throttle opens, responds instantly as the demands upon the boiler alter its internal conditions, and allows the boiler to recuperate after the load ceases.
While the demonstrated form of the device illustrates the improvement, I would have it understood that my invention is not limited to the particular embodiment thereof here shown and described, but obviously may be varied within the spirit and scope of my lnvention.
I claim:
1. A liquid fuel feed regulator consisting of a diaphragm balanced by steam pressure on one side and a compression spring on the other, a concentric rod extending therefrom and transmitting its longitudinal motion to a fuel valve stem whose position relative to the diaphragm is controlled by a mechanical connection with the throttle valve of boiler generating said steam pressure in such a manner that the fuel valve tends to open as the throttle is opened, and vice versa.
2. The combination with a steam generator or boiler and a liquid fuel burner therefor, of a fuel regulating valve controlled by a diaphragm subjected to boiler steam pressure and a mechanical connection with the boiler throttle whereby the relation between valve stem and diaphragm is altered by any change in the setting of the throttle valve.
3. In combination with a steam generator and liquid fuel burner therefor, a regulating valve controlling admission to said burner whose operation is dependent upon the prescontrolling area of the delivery passage of sure within said generator and the setting of said generator. 10 the throttle valve of said generator.
