T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, InviN U. HAGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of BoXbutte and 6State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fuel-Regulators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is directed to improvenient-s in fuel regula-tors, and has for its object to construct a device of this character wherein the supply of fuel is regulated, or entirely shut olf upon steam in the boiler being in excess at a predetermined pressure.
A further object of the invention is to produce a device of this characer particularly adapted for use in connection with locomotive and marine boilers, which will shut off the supply of fuel when the pressirre in the boiler becomes too high, and will open the fuel supply valve when the pressure has been reduced.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construct-ion, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of the device, the fuel controlling valve being in its open position. Fig. 2 is a siinilar sectional view, the fuel controlling valve being in its closed f position, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the burner nozzle.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the cylindrical casing having a peripheral flange 2 formed integral with one end, a washer 3 bearing against the outer surface of said flange, said washer be- .ing formed with a concaved recess 4. The washer 3 is formed with a central aperture 5, and through which projects the reduced end 7 of the piston head 8.
A cap plate 9 is provided, the same being removably connected to the casing 1, by clamping bolts 10, which pass through a diaphragm 11, and through the washer 3 and lia-nge 2, thus serving to hold the parts in their proper position. Formed upon the outer face of the ,cap plate 9 is a threaded nipple 12, and to which is secured the pipe 13 leading from the boiler which causes the pressure of the steam in the boiler to be exerted against the diaphragm 11.
The piston head 8 is slidably mounted in the casing 1, and has formed centrally thereof a bore 14. Mounted within the bore is a heavy coil spring l5, having one end bearing against the piston and the other end against the threaded plug 1G, which adjustably engages in the threaded collar 17 formed integral with the casing l, said plug being for the purpose of regulating the tension of the coil spring 15. The plug 16 is of sufficient length so that a portion thereof will project from the collar 17, said projected portion being 4engaged by a cap nut 18, which when adjusted bears against the colla-r 17, and prevents accidental rotation of the plug 16.
Depending from the casing 1 and arranged in offset relation thereto is a supplement-al casing 19, having passing transversely therethrough a pin 20, and upon which is pivotally connected at its angle portion a bell crank lever 21, having its short arm 22 projected upwardly and through a passage-way 23 formed in the lower side of the casing 1, said arm hz-ving its upper end provided with a ball 24, which is engaged in a socket 25 provided in the piston head 8, whereby shifting of the pis-v ton will rock the arm 22 on its pivot, the ball turning freely in its socket. Bolted to the supplemental casing 19 is a closureplate 26, which when attached forms a passageway 27, and in which operates the long arm 23 of the bell crank lever 21. Formed integral with the upper surface and the supplemental casing 19 is an upwardly projected sleeve 29, the upper end being interiorly threaded for receiving the reduced threaded portion '30 of the plug 31. Formedcentrally of the plug 31 is a guide bore32 for slidably receiving the upper end of the valve stem 33, the lower end of which passes through a bore 34 formed in the guide eX- tension 35 which depends from the closure plate 26. The guide extension 35 is provided with a threaded annular flange 36, and by which the burner 37 is secured. Secured to the eXtreme lower end of the valve stem 33 is a valve disk 38, the purpose and operation will appear later.
The burner'37 is formed with a circular enlargement 39 having projecting from its upper surface the threaded flange 40 for detachably engaging the flange 36 of the guide extension 35. Dividing the circular enlargement in upper and lower compartments 41 and 42, respectively, is a web 43, said web having the central opening 44 Iio ` the steam dome of a boiler.
largement 89 is a nipple 46 and to which connected the pipe 47, which leads from a suitable source of supply of crude oil, said nipple having communication with the upper compartment 41, thus permitting the oil to pass the valve seat 45 and enter the lower compartment 42. The burner further consists oi' an outwardly liared nozzle 48, said nozzle being tapered longitudinally, and is divided into oil and steam passages 49 and 50, respectively, said passagesbeing formed' by the horizontally disposed partition 51. The top plate 52 of the nozzle extends slightly beyond the end edges oi" the partition 51 and bottom plate 58.
By tapering the nozzle longitudinally the top and bottom plates 52 and 53 respectively are thus positioned in relation to the front edge of the partition 51 so ias to produce slots 54 and 55, the slot 54 being for the purpose of ejecting oil to be ignited, the slot 55 serving to permit egress of steam under pressure, drawing the oil from the passage 49 to its point of ignition. The steam under pressure being introduced through a pipe 56 connected to the inner end of the steam passage 50, said pipe leading preferably from As the oil pas sage 49 and steam passage 50 are inclined upwardly and outwardly, the supply of `oil :ted through the slot 54, and after the same has passed the valve seat 45, is governed by the steam under pressure passing through the slot 55, at which time the steam mingles with the oil, thus not only saving the fuel, but creating a blast which directs the flame in fan-like form into the fire box of the engine.
To positively hold the valve 38 upon the seat 45, a coil spring 57 is provided, and surrounds the ripper portion of the valve stem 33, and has one of its ends resting against the under surface of the plug 31, while the other end thereof bears against the upper surface of one of the adjusting nuts 58 threaded upon the valve stem 38. The outer end ot the arm 28 of the bell crank lever is formed with a yoke 5S) which engages the under-surface of the lowermost nut 58.
The operation of the device is as follows: As the steam under pressure from the boiler bears against the diaphragm 11, the same will be forced inwardly, thus shifting the piston head 8 against the tension ot' the sprino' 15, the tension of which may be adjuste as desired, upon manipulation of the threaded plug 1G. This movement of the piston will rock the short arm 22 of the bell crank lever 2l, whereupon the other arm 28 of said lever carrying the yoke 55) upon its outer vnl will bear against the under surface which tends to create suction for of one of the nuts 58, said arm being considerably, longer than the arm 22, thus im* parting considerable movement to the yoke end of the arm 28. From this description it will be seen that the arm 28 will force the valve stem 33 upwardly, but as the diaphragm is shifted or pressed inwardly by the steam pressure, the arm 28 will be swung downwardly to permit the valve disk 38 to seat, thus shutting off the iow of fuel to the burner until the pressure has been reduced to allow the spring 15 to force the piston head outwardly, thus unseating the valve to permit oil to flow thereby and into the oil compartment 42, as hereinbetore mentioned.
Leading from the upper chamber 41 is a duct 60, which serves as means for maintaining a pilot light, for igniting the main supply of oil after the same has been shut oif by the valve 38. l
It is obvious that the device is equally as well adapted for use in connection with steam propelled vehicles.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a casing, of a pressure controlled piston lslidable therein, a longitudinal bore formed in the piston, a plug mounted -in one end of the casing,- a coil spring mounted in the bore and Having one 'end bearing against the piston, and the other end against the plug, said plug being operable to adjust the tension of the spring, a bell crank lever'pivoted to the casing and having one of its arms pivotally connected tothe piston and its other arm being adapted to Contact with-a fuel controlling valve to hold the same open, whereby movement of the piston inwardly rocks the bell crank led ver and causes thesame to disengage said valve, and means forpositively closing the said valve. i
2. A pressure controlled fuel regulator, comprising a main casing, a piston slidable therein, a cap plate for one end of the casing having a central aperture, a diaphragm secured by said cap to the casing, said iston having its outer end passed through t e aperture in the cap and bearing against the diaphragm, a plug mounted in the other end` of the main casing, a coil spring interposed between said plug and said piston to hold I the piston in engagement with the diaphragm, said plug being operable to adjust the tension of the spring, a supplemental casing supported by the main casing and having a valve mounted therein, a spring for the valve, nuts carried by the valve, a
bell crank lever having one arm pivotally connected to the'piston, and its other arm contacting with the nuts to hold the valve in its open position and against the tension of the valve spring, whereby the inward forcing ot' the piston by pressure against the diaphragm causes the piston to move inwardly to roch the bell crank lever, the free end ot said lever moving downwardly thereby permitting the valve spring to positively seat and out' o' the uel supply to the nozzle ofl a steam generating burner. v
8. The combination with a casing2 of a pressure controlled piston slidable 1n the casing, a bell crank lever pivoted t0 the casing and having the end of one arm oonnected to said piston, a valve provided with a stem having an abutment thereon, the remaining arm of the lever bearing on one side of said abutment whereby movement of the piston in one direction opens said valve and movement of the piston in the other direc tion releases said valve for free closing 15 movement, and means independent of said lever for positively closing said valve when the lever moves to release the valve.
