Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALVAH C. SAWYER, OF CANTON, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN TAILORS PRESSING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,100, dated March 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVAH G. SAWYER, of Canton, St. Lawrence county, State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Tailors Pressing-Machines, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my improvement consists, first, in certain mechanical arrangements whereby the goose is allowed to descend upon the work in a vertical line with the pressboarcl, thus avoiding all, or nearly all, side pressure; secondly, by causing the back of the machine to reciprocate vertically, (in substitution for the rocking motion,) this keeps the flexible arm in a position at right angles with the pin upon which it turns, and allows the goose to stop wherever the operator leaves it to adjust his work, giving him more perfect control over his machine.
Having thus described the nature and object of my improvement, I hereby declare that the following is a true, full, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompa nying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a part sectional view, showing my improved mode of raising the pressingarm and goose. Fig. 3 is a top view of the weighted lever looking down upon it. 7
Like letters refer to like parts.
A A is a table, made in any of the wellknown forms. R E is the reciprocating back,
r, Fig. 2.
with its extended treadle U extending to the front of the machine, and terminating in the foot-pad X, Fig. 2. Underneath the table is aweighted lever, I, pivoted to the table at This lever is also pivoted to the back at Y Y, Figs. 1 and 2. The weight WV is'attached to this lever at K. This weight W should be sufficient, by any adjustment, to raise the goose clear of the press-board L, or to balance it. The parallel rod B is pivoted to the back at E E, Figs. 1 and 2. It is also pivoted to the front girt at c, Fig. .2. This parallel rod is merely to keep the back in 'position. N M is a flexible arm, to which is attached, by balland socket joint S H, the goose O. This arm is attached to the back by a hinge-joint at Q, Fig. 1. The press-board I may be made in any of the well known forms. T is the handle of the goose. It is only necessary to press upon the foot-pad of the treadle to bring pressure upon the goose, its several joints above the table allowing perfect control of the goose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The lever I, parallel rod B, in combination with the vertical reciprocating back E E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ALVAH G. SAWYER.
