FANNING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING MACHINES.
No. 271,542. Patented Ja.11.30, 1883.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH H. TABONY, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
FANNING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-'MACHINES.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,542, dated January 30, 1883.
Application filed July 19,1882. (No model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. TABONY, of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fanning Attachments for Sewing and other Machines, of which the to regulate the sweep of the same.
In the drawing the figure is a perspective view, showing the application of my invention.
A represents a sewing-machine, having a standard, B, secured to thetable-board, at the upper end of which standard is pivoted a lever,O, which is connected to the treadle of the machine by the rod D. The standard is attached to the table-board by means of a plate, E, one end of which is secured to the under surface of the board and the other provided with a slot, 0, to serve as a guard for the connecting or driving rod. The standard, which is secured to the upper surface of this plate, is formed of two parts, 12 12, connected by a thumb-screw and adapted to be adjusted longitudinally to make the standard longer or shorter, as may be desired. Near the upper end of the standard is pivoted the lever O, which is provided with a sleeve, 0, having a screw for adjusting it in any desired position on the free end of the lever, and having a holder for the handle of the fan 0. The opposite end of the lever is made in two parts connected by a thumb-screw in the manner of the standard, and for the purpose of regulating the sweep of the fan by the adjustment of said parts. This end of the lever is connected to the treadle of the machine by the rod D, which is formed in two parts, d d, connected together like'the two parts of the standard and the lever above described, and the connectingrod is placed within the slot of the plate E to prevent it from coming in contact with the wall of the house or any other object that might interfere with its movement.
With this construction the standard and connecting-rod may be adjusted longitudinally to elevate or lower the fan to the required height, while the sweep of the fan may be in creased or diminished by shortening or lengthening the lever, respectively. When the lever is made shorter the sweep of the fan may be still further increased by adjusting the latter toward the end of the lever, and when it is made longer the sweep of the fan may be still further diminished by adjusting the. fan in the opposite direction. A great variety of adjustments may thus be made, whereby the fan may be arranged to operate precisely as may be desired by different persons or under different circumstances.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ls-
In a fanning attachment for sewingmachines, the combination of the standard made adjustable longitudinally, the adjustable lever pivoted .thereto, and having the movable holder for the fan, and the connecting-rod having extensible parts and confined within a guard attached to the standard, substantially as shown and described.
JOSEPH HENRY TABONY.
