To all inkom t may concern Be it known that l, RAYMOND MAZELLI, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Bellaire, county of Belmont, and State of Ghio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rim-Breakers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to rim- .tools, and more particularly to an opening and closing tool for demountable tire rims.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a simple and efficient device whereby the split demountable rims. commonly employed for mounting pneumatic tires may be quickly and easily opened and closed.
Vif ith this and other objects in view, the invention resi-des in the features of construction, arrangement of parts and combinations of elements which will hereinafter be fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in whichlfigure 1 is central longitudinal section l of 'he invention, illustrating the application the of,

Referring to said drawings, in which like designating' characters distinguish like parts throughout the several views- 1 indicates two similar alined screw members which are connected by a turnbuckle 2 whe.ebv relative adjustment thereof may be effected. Each of said screw members has its outer end connected by a pivot-pin 3 to the parallel tail portions f1 of a jaw which is generally designated by the numeral 5 and which is pivotally mounted upon a` trans- Ase shaft o. Said shaft has a vertically pin T rigidly mounted in each of op; osite ends, and'pivoted upon the oposite projecting ends of each of said pins are inwardly directed lugs 8 carried by --e upper and lower edges of a plate or bar said lugs being located intermediate the ends of said bar.
This jaw 5 is formed of a single piece of sheet metal and is approximately of U- shape in cross section with the parallel neiiibers thereof mounted upon said shaft 6 oelow and slightly forward of the pivot pin 3, The front, or outer, end of said jaw is constituted by a transverse wall 5a which is inclined somewhat with respect to the longitudinal axis of the jaw and which has its ig. 2 is a section on line 2 2, F ig. 1, and

The oppositely disposed bars 9 have formed on their confronting faces at or adjacent to their outer ends laterally disposed heads or jaws l1, the rearwardly facing walls of which are provided with teeth 12, or are otherwise roughened, said jaws 11 being adapted to engage the outermost surfaces of the opposite clencher-beads or flanges 13 formed on said rim 10, so as to coact with the jaw 5 for engaging the interposed rim l in a vise-like grip.
ln practice, following the placing of the jaws 5 in seating relation to the inner peripheral surface of the rim 10, the outer ends of each pair of bars 9 gravitate downward to points wherein the jaws 11 thereof seat upon the beads 13 at points approximately opposite to the adjacent jaw 5. An adjusting screw 14 carried by the inner end of one of said bars 9 is adapted to be adjusted to cause its end to eXert pressure against the confronting face of the corresponding end of the opposite bar whereby the outer ends of said bars are forced toward each other over the opposite beads 13 of the rim. In this position the device is securelv attached to the rim. Then, as is obvious, rotation of the turnbuckle 2 for drawing the screw members 1 toward each other, not only rocks the jaw 5 on the shaft 6, as on a fulcrum, for increasing the gripping force applied, but also serves to contract the rim by drawing the ends of the split rim past each other in a manner which is obvious. On the other hand, following the application of a tire to the collapsed rim, rotation of the turnbuckle in a direction separating the screw members obviously results in said rim being forcibly eX- panded to restore the ends thereof to their normal relationship.
