PIPE WRENCH.

i which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches and particularly to the type known as pipe wrenches or sometimes they are lmown in the trade as the Stillson wrench. l An object of the invention is to provide a pipe wrench in which the yoke member is formed with safety guard portions and openings therein which I term safety openings or guard devices to prevent the movable Jaw member of the wrench from' being moved outward too far thus avoiding the possible breakage of the yoke.
A further object is to provide means for changing or substituting j aw plates of dif-t ferent shapes so that the wrench may be quickly changed and used with flat jaws or faces as a monkey' wrench, or with curved plates as a pipe wrench to prevent crushing the pipe when it is gripped by the wrench.
. A further obj ect is to provide springbearing plates on the handle member with which the yoke member engages in order to keep the wrench in proper working position.
A further object is to provide the outer end of the handle member with a curved part for forming a pinch bar.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig.,1 is a side elevational view' showing the parts of thewrench assembled and with the triple yoke member attached to the han-VV dle member. In this viewthe gripping jaw plates are shown curved for itting a pipe also the handle member is shown with' a curved end to forma pinch bar.
Figs. 2 and 3 are enlarged views of the inner and outer members'of the movable jaw and of the outer end -of the handle member,
respectively showing the set screws for-- maintaining the jaw plates in position.

Fig. ,9 is a further modication ofthe yoke showing a double guard as a part of 6. These threads are engaged by the in-` teriorly threaded adjusting ring or nut 7. 8 designates a yoke that is pivotally connected to the bar 1 by means of the pin or bolt 9, whereby the jaw 5 and its supporting yoke may be moved about this point as a center. 7 designates an opening in which the nut 7 is located. The yoke 8 is formed with a safety guard piece 10 which is spaced from the body part of the yoke ,by the opening 11. A second safety guard member is indicated at 12 which is spaced from the depending portion 13 of the yoke as indicated atv14 and 15 is an additional safety guard member which surrounds the forward lower end of the handle 1. The opening 11 is for ywhich is moved outward by means of a set `screw 19 which screw is formed with a` conical shaped end 2O which engages the inclined surface 21 of the pin 18, whereby when the set screw 19 is rotated pin 18 is moved outward against the jaw plate thus clamping it in the dove-tailed shaped groove. The pin 18 is formed with arib 18to prevent its rotating, with relation to the set screw .19 or turning out of its position. 22 designates a' removable plate in the movable jaw 5 which is heldin place by means of the set screw 23. 24 (see Fig. 4) designates a Jaw plate that is made flat or smooth on its gripping face and which may be substitute for the rplates 16 or 22 when the wrench 1s to be used as a monkey wrench.
For the purpose of maintaining the yoke 8 p in working position on the handle, springs 26 are placed on the upper and lower edges respectively of the handle 1. These springs are held in place by means of wedges or other suitable devices, indicated at 20.
Fig. 8 shows a yoke shaped member in which a single safety guard device is used and the dependingpart. 15 and the upper extending part 10 of the yoke 8 shown in Fi 1 is omitted. A
gig. 9 shows a yoke the same as Fig. 8 but with the safety guard 10 as well as the guards 12 and 13 but with the ,portion 15 omitted. These safety guard pieces are for the purpose of preventing the member 8 from being displaced should the pin or bolt 9 break. The curved portion 3 serves as a pinch bar and is in effect a combination tool, combining the wrench and pinch bar construction. By employing the saftey guard members, the strain and stresses are equally distributed by the yoke member. Should the part 15 of the yoke 8 break it is clear that the other portions of the yoke would permit it to be used. 1n other words the `safety guard members 10, 12, 13 and 15 serve to permit these portions of the yoke to receive the initial strain when a break occurs, thus serving to prevent a complete breakage of the whole yoke piece.
``What I claim is:
1. In a wrench, the combination of a handle member having a dove-tailed groove at the forward end to receive a jaw plate, means for moving the plate outward comprising a slidable pin formed with an inclined end, a set screw engaging said end for moving the plate outward, as described.
2. In a wrench, the combination, of a handle member, an adjustable jaw' member separate from the handle member, means for connecting the jaw to the handle, the adjustable jaw member having a dove tailed oove, a removable plate in the groove of the adjustable jaw member, a set screw eX- tending from the outer end of said adjustable member for 'forcing the plate against the sides of the groove for holding the plate in position,'said handle member having a removable plate on its outer end which cooperates with the removable plate in the jaw member.
3. In a wrench of the type described, the combination, of a handle member, a yoke pivotally connected thereto for receiving a movable jaw, springs formed with bent end portions and located on the upper and lower edges of the handle member to provide bearing surfaces for the yoke member for retainying it in operative position` for the purpose described, the handle member having openings in which the bent portions of the springs are located.
4. 1n a pipe wrench, the combination, of a handle member, having a fixed jaw member thereon, said jaw having a grooved recess for receiving an interchangeable plate, a pin extendin inward from the plate of the fixed jaw mem er for engaging the plate for moving the same outward, the pin having an inclined end portion, said pin having a rib thereon for retaining it in position, and a set screw engaging its inclinedinner end for moving the pin against the plate for locking the same in position in the recess.
