M'ANIGURE INSTRUMENT.
Application filed July 14, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fnnonmon LOBL, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, and a resident of Middleboro, in the county of Plymouth and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Manicure Instruments, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters onthe drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to toilet articles and particularly to manicure implements. The invention aims to provide an improved article of the nature referred to embodying several novel features.
One embodiment of my invention is described in the following specification and illustrated in the drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a front face view;
Fig. 2, a rear face view;
Fig. 3, a longitudinal section on the line 33 Fig. 1, from the left, and
Fig. 1, a cross-section on the line 1% Fig. 1, looking up.
My invention Fig. 1, as illustrated comprises an elongated body 1, preferably slender and of suitable material, as metal, a portion of which may have its surface, 2, serrated to constitute it a filing or smoothing area. One end 3, of the body is preferably pointed to enable it to be used as a nail cleaner.
One edge 4: may be sharpened if desired, the more conveniently to scrape or scarify the nail surface. The opposite end of the body 1 is provided with a suitable smoothing and polishing member 5, as emery cloth or chamois, or felt, and the body 1 is shown enlarged laterally and provided with an opening or aperture 6 through which the polishing member projects. To permit ready renewal of the polishingmember 5 the body 1 near the upper end thereof has secured thereto in any suitable manner, as by a screw or rivet 7, a spring-like clamping member 8 adapted to lie close to the body 1 and to hold the polishing member 5 in close relation thereto.
This member 8 may be solidand have a section thereof slightly smaller in area than the aperture 6, struck up to such an extent that it will press or force the polishing member 5, into and through the aperture 6. This arrangement acts to hold the polisher firmly in position, and the body 1 provides a'con- Specification of Letters Patent.

venient member for holding or manipulating the polisher.
The member 5 protruding through the opening 6 provides a convenient and effective means for polishing the nail surface, after it has been treated by the file 2. The better to enable the member 5 to fit the nail surface, Fig. 3, the enlarged portion of the body 1 and the clamp member 8 are curved somewhat and to the desired extent, for that purpose. The polishing member 5 may, of
course, as stated, be of any suitable material as cha-mois, felt, emery cloth, etc., and while it will be tightly clamped and held in position by the member 8, the member 5 may be readily removed and a new piece substituted therefor when desired, by springing the member 8 away from the member 1, and swinging it on its pivot for the purpose.
Obviously the body 1 will outwear the polishing member many times, and by making the polishing member removable and renewable, the effective life of the implement as a whole is extended many times.
lVhile it i obvious that my invention is not limited to the particular embodiment disclosed, as to details, I claim:
1. A manicure implement comprising a cleaning point and a smoothing area; and a flexible, polishing member extended through and oifset from the body.
2. A manicure implement comprising a cleaning point, a smoothing area, a polishing member extended through and offset from the body, and a clamping member to hold the polishing member removably in position.
3. A manicure implement comprising an apertured body having a cleaning point, a smoothing area, a polishing sheet member extended through and offset from the body, and a cupped clamping member to force the polishing member removably through the aperture.
4:. A manicure implement comprising an apertured body having a cleaning point, a smoothing area, and adapted to receive a polishing member extended through the aperture, and a clamping member extended also through the body and adapted to force the polishing member through the aperture therein.
5. A manicure implement comprising an apertured body having a cleaning point, a smoothing area, a polishing member, and a part of the handle of the body to reinforce the same. i
'7. A manicure implement comprising the body 1, smoothing area 2, cleaning point 3, polishing member 5 extended through the aperture 6 in the body and locked therein by the clamping member 8.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
