To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN SoMnR- sHon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail-Ties, of which the following is a specification. I
The invention relates to railway ties and has for an object to provide a tie for the support of rails wherebythe ra ls can be readily adjusted to the desired positions and distances and firmly secured, the entire construction taking up any excess vibration in the operation of the rolling stock over the rails. Among other features theinvention comprehends a rail tie embody ng a plurality of interfitting sections, suitably held together by longitudinal rods andsmtably braced at their points of interlitting with suitable brace blocks, the sectlons being bridged by the rails and embodying suitable serrated surfaces with which fish plates or clamps are associated, and in turn arranged to abut against the sides of the rails, the plates when bolted to the sections securely holding the rails in position.
In the further disclosure of the invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which,-

Referring more particularly to the views, I provide interfitting sections 10, 11, the inner ends of the section 10 at the extremities of upper and lower plates 10, 10, being formed with knuckles 12. to fit the inner extremities of the section 11 which includes upper and lower plates, 11, 11", formed with recesses 13, corresponding to the knuckles 12, to receive the same. A brace block 14: is disposed between the upper and lower plates, 10 11 and 10 11 at the points of interfitting of the sections and is held against longitudinal movement along the sections by depending flanges 15, formed with the undersides of the upper plates 10*, 11, and upstanding flanges 16 formed with Specification of Letters i atent.

the lower plates 10 11 Longitudinal binding rods 17 pass longitudinally through the sections 10, 1'1, and through openings 18 in the brace block 14, the extremities of the rods being threaded to receive nuts 19 so that the sections l0, 11, will be securely bound together after being interfitted.
Each section 10, 11, in the upper plate 10 or 11 as the case may be, is formed with a depression 20, the floor or bottom of which is formed with a series of teeth or serrations 21, and also longitudinally slotted as at 22, bolts 23 being fitted in additional longitudinal slots 24: in the under side of the upper plate with the shanks of the bolts passing through the longitudinal slots 22 as shown. Each section furthermore is provided with a series of fish plates or clamping members 25, the under-side of each of which is formed with a series of teeth or serrations 26, to tit the teeth or serrations 21, these clamping plates being disposed in the mentioned depression 20 with the bolts 23 arranged to extend through the clamping plates and at their upper ends receive suit able nuts 26 for securely binding the clamping plates in position on the sections. The rails are indicated by the numeral 27 and after being arranged to bridge the sections, and spaced apart the desired distance, the clamping plates 25 are arranged in position to abut against the sides of the rails and are securely clamped and held in place by the teeth on the plates and the teeth on the sections and the bolts 23 arranged to readily hold the plates in position. Suitable cotter pins 28 can be provided to lock the nuts on the bolts 23 and also to lock the nuts 19 on the longitudinal rods 17 and it will of course be obvious that any convenient form of device can be employed for holding the nuts on the bolts or rods to prevent them from working loose.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that when the various parts of the rail tie have been assembled and secured as mentioned, the entire structure will present a unitary appearance, the two or more sections being securely bound together by the knuclrle' joints and longitudinal rods; reinforced at their points of connection by the brace block, and the bridging rails secured in their adjusted positions by the clamping plates disposed to have their toothed pieces or under-sides engage With the teeth or serrations on the sections, the clamping Patented Mar. 1, 1921. plates being then bolted and securely fastened to the sections. With this construction the bridging rails will be securely fas tened in place with the ends of the fish or clamping platesabutting against the sides of the rails to hold them in position, without however preventing the usual expansion or contraction which takes place in rails due to changes in climatic conditions.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. A rail tie 'com rising interfitting sections, lugs spaced rom the adjacent ends of the sections, to provide a seat for a brace block, 'a brace block disposed between the V I ends of the sections and abutting the lugs and longitudinal tie rods passing through the sections and the brace block and securely tying them together.
2. A rail tie comprising a plurality of interfitting sections, a brace block disposed at the points of interfitting of'the sections,
longitudinal tie rods passing through the sections and the brace block to securely has ten them together and means for securing the rails to the tie.
