It is the purpose of the present invention to provide an improved rail clamp for use in connection with metallic ties, particularly of the type herein illustrated, though it is obvious the clamp may be used in connection with other forms of metallic tics. Y
Still another purpose is to provide an improved clamping means for the rails, comprising channels or key ways extending transversely of the tie, to receive wedges or tapered keys, for passing through rail anchoring members or keys, to Vclamp the rails in position.
A further purpose consists in the provision of means carried by fish plates for the reception of the heads of the rail anchors or keys, to prevent movement of therails longitudinally.
While the design and construction at present illustrated and set forth is deemed preferable, it is obvious that as a result of a reduction of the invention to a more practical forinV for commercial purposes, the invention may be susceptible of changes, and the right to these changes is claimed, provided they are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

Y I portions, preferably beveled on its sides and ends as shown, with Vits under surface hollowed or chambered out, so that the ballast or bed of the road will engage up into the chamber of the tie, tov assist in preventing creeping. The tie may be cast, though it may be otherwise formed, and the hollowed or chambered out under surface is provided with longitudinally and transversely eX- tending intersecting webs 2 and 3, which coperate with the Hanges 4 and 5 ofthe b eveled sides and ends ofthe tie, to additionally assist in preventing creeping. The flanges 4 are cut away as shown at 6, so as to permit the ballast to engage with the flanges, to additionally prevent creeping.
Also cast integral with the under surface of the tie are transversely disposed ribs 7 having channels or key ways 8, which receive the wedges or tapered keys 9. The keys or wedges extend through the channels or key ways, so that their tapers assume positions in opposite directions. Formed integrally with the-ribs 7 are enlargements 10,V which are hollowed out, and these chambers 11 are ntersected bythe channels or key ways 8. The enlargements 1() are diagonally disposed, there being one on each side of each rail. The chambers 11 of the enlargements receive rail anchors 12, which are provided with openings 13, through which the keys 9 pass. The keys 9 are tapered, and their smaller ends are provided with offset slots 14, either one of which of each key receives a cotter pin 15, constructed of sheet spring metal, to hold the keys 9 in position, and thereby holding the anchors in place. The upper ends of the anchors 12 are provided with heads 16 to overlie the bases of the rails, thereby holding the rails from displacement upwardly. The adjacent ends of two rails 17 which are connected together by the fish plates 18, have bolts 19 passing through the fish plates and the rails, to connect the parts together.
The base anges of the fish plates on diagonally opposite sides of the rails have notches 20 for the reception of the heads 16 of the anchors, which not only anchor the rails upon the tie, but also act to anchor the railsagainst longitudinal movement, due to engaging the notches 20 of the bases of the lishy plates. The upper surface of the tie adjacent both ends thereof has ribs 21, which are spaced equal to the width of the bases of the rails, so that the bases of the rails may engage therebetween. These are positioned, according to thespaclng of the rails, to insure holding the rails 'in posi# tion. y Y. I The invention having been set forth,Y what :is olaimed ras being useful is:
