lowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to ties and rail fasteners, and the primary object of my invention is to furnish an ordinary wooden tie with en d caps that will prevent the ends of the tie from deterlorating or being worn by continuous tamping or the pounding of rolling stock upon the tie.
Another object of this invention is to furnish a tie with rail fasteners that are positively tied relatively to the tie, whereby the rails held by the fasteners cannot become laterally, vertically or otherwise disposed due to the great weight of rolling stock that passes over the rails.
A further object of this invention is to ob viate the necessity of using spikes for securing rails to a tie, and to substitute strong and durable means that can be installed without the use of skilled labor.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a rail fastener that can be rapidly adjusted to compensate for wear, the fastener being applicable to the present type of tie, thereby eliminating the great expense that would be incurred by completely installing new ties.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tie and rail fastener in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a plan of a portion of the same, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a detached fastener bar, Fig. t is a similar view of a detached inner fastener, and Fig. 5 is a perspective View of a detached tie, end cap and outer fastener.
The reference numeral 1 denotes an ordinary wooden tie adapted to support the base flanges 2 of rails 3 adjacent to the ends thereof. Fitted upon the ends of the tie are caps having bottom plates 4, side walls 5, and top plates 6. The bottom plates are of a greater length than the side walls 5, said bottom plates having the inner ends thereof provided with lateral. side lugs '7, said lugs having openings 8 formed therein for a purpose that will hereinafter appear. The side walls 5 have the ends thereof pro vided with outwardly extending apertured lugs 9 and 10, said lugs being arranged in parallelism. The upper inner edges of the side walls 5 are cut away, as at 11 to provide a seat for the outer base flanges 2 of the rails 3, and formed integral with the top plates 6 is an overhanging flange 12 that constitutes an outer fastener for the rails 8. The flange 12 extends over the outer base flange of the rail 3 and prevents said rail from spreading relatively to the other rail of the track.
Engaging the inner base flanges 2 of the rails 3 are inner fasteners 13 that are mount I ed upon the tie 1, said fasteners having the inner ends thereof provided with transverse grooves 141. Engaging in the grooves 14: are yokes 15 having the side arms 16 thereof extending downwardly at the sides of the tie toward the apertured lugs 9, the ends of the arms 16 extending through the aperturcd lugs 9 and are threaded to receive nuts 17. By adjusting the nuts 17, the yokes 15 can be drawn against the inner fasteners to bind. the same in engagement with the rails 3. Arranged upon the top of each inner fastener is a transverse bar 18 having the ends thereof apertured, as at 19. The apertures 19 of the transverse bars 18 vertically aline with the openings 8 of the lugs 7, and arranged in the openings 8 and 19 are vertical bolts or tie rods 20 having the upper ends thereof screw threaded to receive nuts 21. It is through the medium of the bolts or tie rods 20 that the inner fasteners 13 are firmly clamped upon the top of the tie 1.
Connecting the apertured lugs 10 at the sides of the tie are longitudinal tie rods 22 having the ends thereof threaded and provided with nuts 23. By adjusting the nuts 23 the metallic caps upon the ends of the tie 1 can be drawn together, whereby the outer fasteners cannot slip and release the rails 3. From the fore oing it will be observed that the tie 1 is inclosed in a metallic harness or framework that preserves the shape of the tie besides retaining the fasteners thereon. The arrangement of the harness or framework is such that the frame can be repeatedly adjusted to compensate for wear,
and With the metallic caps upon the ends of the Wooden tie, the tie is prevented from being injured When the same is tamped or embedded in a roadbed.
It is thought that the manner'of assembling the parts and the utility of my invention Will be apparent Without further description, and While in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof are susceptible to such changes as fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. In a tie and rail fastener, the combination with a tie, and rails supported thereby, of caps mounted upon the ends of said tie and providing outer rail fasteners for said rail, apertured lugs carried by said caps, inner rail fasteners mounted upon said tie and bracing the inner sides of said rails, transverse bars arranged upon said inner fasteners, vertical bolts connecting said bars with some of the apertured lugs of said caps, yokes engaging the inner ends of said inner fasteners and connected to other apertured lugs of said caps, and longitudinal tie rods connecting still other apertured lugs of said caps.
2. In a tie and rail fastener, the combination With a tie, and rails supported thereby, of caps fitted upon the ends of said tie, outer rail fasteners carried thereby and bracing the outer sides of said rails, apertured lugs carried by said caps, inner fasteners mounted upon said tie and bracing the inner sides of said rail, yokes connecting said inner fasteners to the outer ends of said caps, bolts connected to some of the apertured lugs of said caps and adapted to retain said fasteners upon said tie, and means connecting said caps whereby said caps cannot become longitudinally displaced relatively to said tie.
The combination with a tie, and rails supported thereby, of caps mounted upon the ends of said tie and providing outer rail fasteners, inner rail fasteners arranged upon said tie, yokes anchoring said inner fasteners relatively to said outer fasteners, and tie rods arranged longitudinally of said tie and connecting said caps.
