HAIR-CLIPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

v To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHESTER H.-BEACH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Racine, county of Racine, and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Clippers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hair clippers, and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of this character which is convenient and durable in use, efficient in operation and capable of economical manufacture.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,

The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a hollow handle 10, arranged to be used in an inclined position, as shown, and divided by transverse partitions l0 and 10" into chambers 11, 12 and 13, as shown, a removable closure plate 14 being arranged on the bottom of the handle to give access to said chambers. A drive shaft 15 is rotatably mounted in chambers 11 and 12, said drive shaft being provided with a worm 16 operating in chamber 12 and extending through a boss 17 formed on partition 10', and being provided with an end thrust bearing in a boss 18 provided on partition 10, as indicated. A socket opening 19 is provided in the outer upper end of the handle 10, said socket opening being located substantially centrally in the end of said handle and in-- clined laterally and downwardly therein in axial alinement with the axis of shaft 15 to permit of insertion of the usual flexible shaft for operating or driving the worm shaft 15. said worm shaft 15 being provided with the usual socket and slot 20 for the reception of and engagement with said flexible shaft. The arrangement of the socket l9 and shaft 15 in inclined position, as shown, permits of the engagement with the flexible shaft substantially centrally with reference to the handle 10, thus greatly facilitating the use and manipulations of the clipper.
The thrust bearing for shaft 15 in the boss 18 comprises a steel disk 21 fitted into the bottom of a suitable recess provided in said boss, a bushing 22 for the reception of the end of shaft 15 being inserted in said recess on top of said disk, as shown in Fig. 3. The bushing 22 is provided with an annular groove 23 in the exterior surface thereof, said groove being filled with a suitable wicking and said groove being flattened at one side 15 to open into the shaft opening of said bushing to cause contact between the wicking 24 and the shaft end 15, thus carrying oil to said shaft end, there being an oil hole 26 provided in the upper side of handle 10 to permit of the insertion of oil when desired. A steel ball 27 is positioned in the bushing 23 to hear at one point upon plate 21 and the corresponding end of shaft 15 is provided with a conical recess 28 fitting said ball, such arrangement constituting a simple and eflicient end thrust bearing for the shaft 15. The shaft 15 is provided with a stop shoulder 29 at the end of the worm thereon, which constitutes a stop to prevent accidental displacement of the bushing 22, as indicated.
The partition 10 and the boss 17 are provided with a shaft bearing opening of a size to permit of the free passage of the worm 16 to facilitate assembling of the parts, and a bushing 30 is fitted within said opening to constitute the bearing proper of shaft 15 at this point. The bushing 30 is provided with a central annular exterior groove 31, similar in all respects, except ing the same integrally therewith.
size, with the groove 23 is bushing 22, and also filled with wicking contacting with the shaft 15 and supplied with oil through an oil hole 32 in the upper side of handle 10, a set screw 33, accessible upon removal of plate 14, serving to secure the bushing in place. By this arrangement it will be observed that by removing the set screw 33, the shaft 15 and all of its bearings may be readily removed or replaced, as desired. A stop shoulder 34 is provided on shaft 15 at the end of worm 16, and a stop or sealing washer 34', of felt or other suitable material, is interposed between said shoulder and the corresponding end of bushing 30 to seal the high speed bearing in bushing 30 from the entry of heavy grease from chamber 12, said heavy grease being applied to the worm 16 and its operative connections.
The worm 16 on shaft 15 meshes with a worm wheel 35 in chamber 12, said worm wheel being loosely mounted on a stud shaft 36, provided with an annular groove 37, by means of which the same is permanently anchored in position in chamber 10 by cast- Worm wheel 35 carries a plate 38 secured thereto by screws, rivets or the like, and said plate 38 carries an eccentric crank pin 39 loosely engaging the corresponding opening in ashort link 40, which is provided at its outer or free end with another opening loosely engaging a stud 41 on the corresponding end of an operating lever 42, as shown, such arrangement permitting of the ready assembling or removing of the parts by simply removing the lever 42, but said lever 42 normally serving to lock and hold said parts in operative relation with each other. The lever 42 passes freely through a notch 43 provided in the partition 10, andis fulcrumed on a removable stud screw 44 mounted in a boss provided in chamber 13, as shown, the screw 44 thus permitting of the ready removal of lever 42 and thus the release of the worm 35 and its cotiperating parts.
At its lower end, the lever 42 is extended horizontally at 45 and provided with a slot 46 working freely over an upstanding threaded stud 47 on the lower horizontally extending portion of handle 10. The extreme end of lever 42 is turned downwardly at 48 to form a lug engaging a notch 49 in the rear of the usual reciprocating cutter blade 50 coiiperating with the usual cutter head 51 secured to the lower end of handle 10, as indicated. The usual housing 52 is fitted loosely over stud 47 and bears at its lower forward edge 53 on the top of the cutter blade 50, thus forcing said cutter blade into operative contact with the cutter head 51 in the usual manner. A binding nut 54 is threaded on the upper end of the stud 47, and an arched or bowed spring washer 55 is interposed between the nut 54 and the top of housing 52. The washer 55 is provided at its outer edge with a slightly depressed lip or tongue 56, which engages a corresponding recess or socket 57 in the top of housing 52, thus serving to constantly position the washer 55 in place to exert a constant down pressure on the cutting blade 50 and preventing the turning of the washer with the nut 54, which would tend to vary such pressure or entirely eliminate the same. The nut 54 and the stud 47 are provided with cooperating stop shoulders 58 arranged to engage, after the proper tension has been exerted uuon spring washer 55, thus preventing the application of too much or inj urious pressure to the cutting blade 50. By this arrangement, the manufacturer can provide the proper tension between the cutting blade 50 and the cutter head 51 by providing a suitable spring washer 55, and the user of the clipper cannot adjust the same to exceed such tension and consequently cause injury to the parts.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A drive shaft connection comprising a rotating element; a lever; a link connecting said lever and element, the connection between said lever, link and element and the mounting of said element being loose and laterally removable, but held in place by said lever; and a removable fulcrum for sand lever, substantially as described.
2. A drive arrangement comprising a stud; a worm wheel fitted loosely over said stud; a crank pin on said worm wheel; a link having one end fitted loosely over said crank pin, there being a stud opening at the other end of said link; a lever carrying a stud loosely engaging said stud opening; and a removable fulcrum for said lever, substantially as described.
3. A hair clipper comprising a handle; a cutter head, including a cutting blade on said handle; a rotating element in said handle; a lever in said handle operatively connected with said blade and in operative relation with said element; a link connecting said lever and element, the connection between said lever, link and element, and the mounting of said element being loose and laterally removable, but held in place by said lever; and a removable fulcrum for said lever substantially as described.
4. A hair clipper comprisin a handle; a cutter head, including a cutting blade, on said handle; a stud in said handle; a worm wheel fitted loosely over said stud; a crank pin on said worm wheel; a link having one end fitted loosely over said crank pin, there being a stud opening at the other end of said link; a lever carrying a stud at one end loosely engaging said stud opening and operatively connected at its other end with said cutting blade; and a removable fulcrum for said lever, substantially as described.
5. A hair clipper comprising a hollow handle; a horizontally turned cutter head at one end of said handle and including a reciprocatory cutter blade; a stud in said handle; a worm Wheel fitted loosely over said stud; a crank pin on said Worm wheel; a link having one end fitted loosely over said crank pin, there being a stud opening at the other end of said link; a lever carrying, at one end, a stud loosely engaging said stud opening, the other end of said lever being extended horizontally above said cover head and then turned downwardly to form a lug, said cutting blade being slotted to engage said lug; and a removable fulcrum screw holding said lever in place, substantially as described.
6. A hair clipper comprising a hollow handle; a horizontally turned cutter head at one end of said handle and including a reciprocatory cutter blade; a stud in said handle; a worm wheel fitted loosely over said stud; a crank pin on said worm wheel; a link having one end fitted loosely over said crank pin, there being a stud opening at the other end of said link; a lever carrying, at one end, a stud loosely engaging said stud opening, the other end of said lever being extended horizontally above said cover head and then turned downwardly to form 8. lug, said cutting blade being slotted to engage said lug; a removable fulcrum screw holding said lever in place; and a worm shaft carrying a worm meshing with said worm wheel, said worm shaft being arranged in said handle at an angle to the longitudinal medial vertical plane thereof, there being a socket opening centrally positioned in the outer end of said handle and leading to said worm shaft for the insertion of a flexible shaft to connect with said worm shaft, substantially as described.
7. A hair clipper comprising a hollow handle having a horizontally turned cutter head at one end; a reciprocatory cutter blade on said head; an upstanding stud positioned on said head; a housing fitting loosely over said stud and impinging on said cutting blade; a stud shaft in said handle; a worm wheel fitted loosely over said stud shaft; a crank pin on said worm wheel; a link having one end fitted loosely over said crank pin, there being a stud shaft opening atthe other end of said link; a lever carrying at one end a stud shaft loosely engaging said stud shaft opening, the other end of said lever being extended horizontally and slotted to permit the free passage of a stud on said cutter head, the extreme lower end of said lever being turned downwardly to form a lug and there being a notch in said cutting blade engaging said lug; and a removable fulcrum screw for said lever, substantially as described.
