LEWIS W. SCUTT, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
UMBnELLA-MARKER.
T 0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Liiwis W. SoU'rT, a citizen of the United States, residing at VCleveland in the county of Cuyahoga and and exact description, reference being had' to the accompanying drawings.
This invention -V relates to a device for marking or checking umbrellas and the like; and the main object is to-provide a durable and inexpensivev device of this character which may be quickly and conveniently attached to an umbrella, taking the place of the common forms of checks that are attached by means of leather straps. This prevailing method of checking umbrellas has several disadvantages. The looping'of the strap about the umbrella consumes considerable time; the strap voften becomes tangled occasioning further delay; the loop of the strap tears out easily especially after the leather deteriorates from frequent wetting; and the check suspendedfrom the strap becomes infolded within the cover of the urnbrella and concealed from view, making it inconvenient to identify the umbrella by check number. These difficulties are overcome by the use of my improved marker. p
Further objects of my invention are to provide a device of the aforesaid character involving a loop through which the umbrella maybe projected in such a way thatl the cover of the umbrella will be compressed into small scope and held against undue flar-V ing; to provide a device of this nature involving a conning yoke for retaining the ends of the ribs closely about the handle; to connect tlie loop and 'yoke by a resilient stem which is placed under tension when the device is applied to an umbrella, thereby to securely hold the device in place and the umbrella inthe condition above described; to incorporate in the device a hook for supporting it from a rack or the like and in such manner as to hold the Yumbrella against swinging inv any direction; to include a Amarker or'tag which is disposed in plain view when the device vis applied to anv umbrella; and, preferably, to provide the de-r Speciication of Letters Patent. v P-atnted :MaI-o 1, 1921 Application filed November 29, 1918. Serial No. 264,521. l
vice with means for removably attaching to it a check bearing an identification mark corresponding to that on thel tag of the marker, so that the checkmay be easily and quickly Vremoved by the checker and presented to the depositor ofthe umbrella.l
*These several objects are attained in Ythe umbrella supported by the ymarker upon al rack; F ig. l is an enlarged ,sectional detail through the supporting rail of the' rack and showing the manner in whichthe hooko'f the marker coperates with the rail; and
Figs. 5 and 6 are diagrams, the former-indicating'vthemarker inits `relaxed condition removed from anumbrella, and the latter v showing the device undertension as when applied to an umbrella; Y e
The device is preferably -formed. of =a single piece of resilient wire that is formed at one end into a loop -l,'connectedby a stem 2 to a suspension hook 3. Extending later` ally from the hook 3 is a retaining yoke 4, the same terminating in a compressible loop 5 adapted to' be `forcibly projected :through a slot 6 of a'check 7,`the loop 5 being so constructed as toyield, as the check is 'forced over its enlarged end after which it expands v'slightly to engage a notch 8 of the loop with'-v in the end of the slot.l The extreme end of the wire whereof the loop 5 is Vformed reposes Vwithin an offset 9 in theadjacent branch 'of the yoke 4j so that'the' end of the wire cannot in any way interfere with adjacent parts of the umbrella.
' A marker or tag 10 is attached toparallel -portions of the wire where they formthe top of the suspension hogk 3 as by having its ends bent over and under such parallel portions, the tag, andthe check7 associated with the particular device, bearing corresponding designations. i
. Invthe use of vthe device, the vcheck removed andpresentedto the party deposit,-
ing the umbrella; the umbrella is inserted through the loop l andthe stem 2 is sprung laterally sufciently to engage the yoke 4t about the ends of the umbrella ribs, and, when released, the tendency of the stem 2 to straighten places the entire device sutil-- ciently under tension -to hold the parts snugly together. The hook 3, having a broad bearing surface on the top of the supporting rail l1 of the rack 12 prevents the umbrella swinging sidewise; and the fact that it snugly embracesI the top edge of the rall, engaging the front and rear surfaces thereof, as shown in Fig. Ll, prevents the umbrella from swinging at right angles-'to the rail.
Thus it will be seen that my invention provides a neat, inexpensive and very durable device which may be convenientlyand quickly applied to such articles as umbrellas, for the purpose of marking jthem or suspendingthem from suitable supports. Attention is also called to the fact that the `marker is so designed as to permit its use necting the loop andyoke, an identifying device incorporated in the assembly, and
means Vfor detachably connecting a corre-` sponding identifying device to the assembly.
3.1In a" device 'of the character set forth, the combination of a loop, a stem to which the loop is connected, a laterally extending yoke spaced from the loop and connected to the stem, `and a suspension vhook yincorporated in the assembly.
4. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a loop, a stem to one end of which the-loop 1s connected, a laterally extending yoke connected to the opposite end of the stern, and a suspension hook at the junction of the yoke with the stem.
5. In a device of the characterset forth, the combination of a loop, a stemto one end of which the loop is connected, a laterally extending yoke connected to the Vopposite end of the same, a suspension hook at the junction of the yoke with the stem, and identifying means incorporated in the device adjacent the suspensionhook. j
.6. A device of the character set forth comprising a loop, a stem to oney end of which the loop is connected,y a yoke connected to erally into the form of` a yoke.
adapted to be engaged about one portion of an article, a yoke at the opposite end of the K stem and adapted, when the stem is sprung laterally, to be engaged about a remote portion of the article, and an identifying device incorporated in the assembly. v
8. A device of the character Vset forth formed of resilient material and comprising a stem, a loop at one end thereof and adapted to be engaged about one portion of an article, a yoke at the opposite end of the stem and adapted, when the stem is sprung laterally, to be engaged about `a-remote p0rtion of the article, and a supporting hook incorporated in said assembly.
9. A device of the character set forth comprising a single piece of resilient wire formed-at one end to constitute a loop and at the other end to constitute a yoke in a plane at substantially right langles to the normal plane of the yoke, an intermediate portion of the wire being formed into a suspension hook. Y
l0. An umbrellamarker comprising a single piece of resilient wire formed at one end to vconstitute a loop, and at the other end to v constitute a yoke in a plane at substantially right angles to the normal plane ofthe yoke, and an identification device applied to the wire. 1
ll. A device of the character set forth, constructed of resilient wire terminating at one end in a loop, a remote portion of the wire extending laterally at right angles then downwardly and upwardly in a plane substantially parallel to the body portion of the wire and then in a direction parallel to the aforesaid right angle portion, the wire therevbeyond extendingv downwardly in substantially the plane of the body portionand latj 12. device of heV character set forth constructed of resilient wire terminating at one end in a loop, a remote portion of the wire extending laterally at right angles then downwardly and upwardly in a' plane substantially parallel to the body portion of the wire and then -in a'direotion parallel to the aforesaid right angle portion, the wire therebeyond extending downwardly in substantiaiiy the plane of the bodyportion and laterally into thefform of a yoke, the end portion of the wire turning back over itself and toward the adjacent branch of the yoke to constitute a loop over which a 'slotted check is adapted to be removably engaged,
A one branch of said loop having a retaining notch for Jhe cheek, and a metal strap having its ends engaged about the parallel portions of the Wire, the strap and check bear- 5 ing corresponding marks of' identioation.
