Be it known that I, RUBEN E. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bremertom in the county, 'of Kitsap and State of lVashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of
' which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a fuel pump, more particularly. designed for Diesel and semi-Diesel engines,` the principal object of the invention being to provide a duplex pump for piunping-two different Vkinds of fuel to the engine.
A other object of the invention is to provide valve means for controlling the flow p vof eac-h fuel to the pump.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for adjusting the quantity of fuel delivered by the pump.
This invention also consists in certainother features of constructionand in the combination and arrangement oft-he several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specii' cally pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like charactersdenote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a section through a part cony upper end of which has screw threaded en' gagement with the upper part of the body, as shown at 4. The upper part of each sleeve is of square shape in cross section and a worm wheelf has a square opening slidinglv engaging said square part, the wheel being held'against transverse/movement by means of the cap 6 which is bolted to the body. These partskare so arranged that the wheel may rotate and thus rotate the sleeve to adjust it longitudinally. The lower part of this sleeve is provided with the ports 7 which are adapted to engage with the grooves 8 formed in the walls of the cvlinder, these grooves being connected with the inlet passage 9 and the outletpassage10.
A chamber 11 forms a part'of the passage 9 and this chamber is connected by a port 12 with a chamber 13, surrounding the central part of the sleeve so that some of the fuel will pass into said chamber 13 and 1uspcianon of Lettersratent. A valve sleeve 16 passes through the chamber and this sleeve carries the valve member 17 which controls the ports 18 in said sleeve and thus regulates the flow -of ,fuel through the passage 9L` The valve memand these shafts may beeonnected with Ia suitable governor or may be actuated bvv hand to control the ow of thediilerennt fuels to the pumps. A check valve 23 is located in each outlet passage 10. The pump plungers 24 ha-ve'their upper' ends secured to a cross head 25 so that they `reciprocate in the sleevein unison. The cross head is carried by a centrally located rod 26 which passes through the body and is normally held in lowered position by a spring 27. This spring holds the lower end of the rod against a cam 28 which is carried by a shaft 29 journaled within the lower part of the,
body and is adapted to be rotated from any vided with a clutch part 30 which is pressed, by a'spring 31, against thecclutch sleeve 32 carried by the shaft. By this arrangement of parts the cam will only be rotated in one direction by the shaft for when the shaft is rotated in an opposite direction the cam part of sleeve 32 will force the cam toward the right and compress the spring, the pressure of the spring pressed rod 26 on the cam preventing the cam from rotating.
The worm wheels 5 are engaged b the wheels 33 carried by the shaft 34 which-is adapted to be rotated from any suitable source.
It will be'seen that when the pump plungers are being reciprocated the fuel will be drawn into the chamber 11 bv the" suction and will pass from this chamber through i suitable source of power. The cam is pro-'f the valve member, if the same is open, into the cylinder to port 7 On the compression stroke the fuel will be forced through the passage 10' to the engine.` The quantity of fuel vbeing injected into the engine may be varied by the sleeve 3 as by adjusting said sleeve longitudinally the ports 7 therein will be adjusted in relation Ito the end of the plunger and thusregulate the quantity of fuelbeing delivered by the plunger. If' the sleeve is raised the plunger will close the ports 7 thus cutting oif the escape of the remaining fuel in the Acylinder and this fuel will act as a cushion for the plunger.
A governing of the pumps is accomplishedindependently through rods 21 which actuate the arms 20. If it is desired, as in starting,
' to use more volatile oil the arm acting on the valve member for the lless volatile oil is depressed so as to hold this valve member open and permit^the opposite pump for the` volatile oil to operate Without interferenceon the part of the other pump. After the engine is started and it is desired to use the less volatile oil then the opposite arm is depressed to open the valve ofthe volatile oils and permit the pump therefor to run idle.
The parts 12, 13, 14 and 15 also serve to drain the fuel oil which might 'pass the plunl ger 24 into the suction chamber.

2. An apparatus ofthe classl described comprising av body having a pair of cylinders therein, a longitudinally adjustable sleeve in each cylinder having inlet and outlet ports therein, the cylinder having inlet and outletA passages communicating with said ports, a
cross head connected with the plungers,
means for reciprocating the c'ross head, a spring controlled valve for normally closing the inlet leading to each cylinder and means for actuating said valves independently of each other.

An apparatus of the class described comprising a body having a pair of cylinders therein, a longitudinally adjustable sleeve in each cylinder having inlet and outletl ports therein, the cylinder having inlet and outlet passages communicating with the ports, a plunger in each sleeve, a cross head connected with the plungers, a rod connected with the crosshead, a power sha-ft, a cam thereon engaging thelower end of the said rod, spring means for holding the rod in engagement with the cam and independently actuated! valves for controlling the inlet passages of the cylinders.
