f UNITED f STM ATE-NT; FFICE f SAMUEL wAnK, or oaTING, WASHINGTON.) 1
To cdlib/vom it may concern.' f
Be ityknown that AI., SAMUEL VVARK, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Orting, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvenients in Washing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to washing machinery; and it contemplates the provision of a simple, easily constructed and efficient apparatus of the suction-plunger type, and one adapted to be operatedwith the eX- penditure of but little eort.
Other objects and practical advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim, whenV Fig. 6 is an inverted plan view of the pluner. Y Y g Similar numerals of reference ldesignate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
My novel washing apparatus involves the use of a tub 1, which may be an ordinary wash tub, or any otherpreceptacle' of about the same diameter asa wash tub.
The said tub 1 is designed to be superimposed upon a support 2, whichv may be a bench or the like, and fixed to Vand rising from the support 2 is an uprightl 3, to the upper portion of which is pivotally connected one end of a long hand lever 4, the latter being arranged to be swung vertically in a plane above the center of the tub 1. In the preferred embodiment of my invention the lever et is provided above the tub with a longitudinal vertical slot 5.
'Arranged to be reciprocated vertically in the tub 1 is the plunger 6, which constitutes the salient element of the apparatus.V The said plunger 6 is characterized -by a specic construction that is at once susceptible of production without the employmentv of expensive machinery, -and is simple and free WASINGAPMRTUS.

fromi delicate'parts such Aas are likely "to rget l' out oforder after a short period'ofuse. The said plunger comprises a vcircular wooden body 7 having a central vertical aperture 8, a metallic flange 9 Xed to and depending from the perimeter of the body 7, a bail 10 disposed diametrically above the body 7 and fixedly attached at its ends to said body, aV vertical central shank 11 into which the bail merges at a point above the center'a'perture 8 of the body, a housing 12, of sheet metal, fixed upon the upper side of the body 7 and having its body wall 13 spaced above the wooden body 7 and provided with an aperture 14 that is registered with the aperture 8, and a vertically swinging clack valve l5, preferably of sheet metal, hingedly connected at one end to the top wall of the housing. The shank 1l of the plunger is dis-v posed in the slot 5 of the hand lever Lland is pivotally connected to said hand lever through the medium of a pintle 16 which extends through one of a plurality of apertures 17 inthe shank; the plurality of apertures `clearance of'approximately a half inch between the exterior of the plunger flange 9 angl the inner side of theside wall of the tu 1.
In the practical operation of my improvement the lever 4 is oscillated by hand to move the plunger rectilinearly downwardly and upwardly in the tub.l Incidental. to the downward movement of the plunger the valve 15 will open so as to render the movement easy and so as to enable the flange 9 and the body 7 to crowd the mass of clothes in the tub and during .the upward movement of the plunger the valve will close with the result that the plunger will exert-upward suction calculated to Vviolently draw the water and the detergent therein through the v clothes with the result that the clothes will be quickly and thoroughly cleansed, and this without injury to the clothes, irrespective of the character thereof.
As shown by dotted lines in Fig. 5, the bail 10 serves the supplemental function of limiting lthe opening movement of the clack I vtus'are simplicity and'strength in construction, ease of operation, and capacity to quickly and thoroughly cleanse clothes With the expenditure of but a minimum amount of effort on the part of the operator.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to'secure by Letters Patent,
VVISI and ,pendent IOm thefperimeterrg thebdy,
a "hetfmfetel "hpusing mounted., upon the bQdy and haring a. flange fix-.ed O the, body and also havinga 'Central aperture above and registered with that in the body, a Verticall l5 in hinged manner to said Wall, and atransverse bailin a vertical plane parallel to and spaced from that ofthe hinge and straddling 20 thelhousng above and attached tothe:i1p'per .siderofthe-body having vertical lapped andconnected portions forming a s hank..
