' To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUGUST MEYER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, resident of New York, county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Operating Mechanism for Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in washing machines, and particularly t-o types adapted for home laundries. i

The principal object of the invention is'` to provide a machine which may be manually operated at a slight expense of physical labor, and by means of which clothing may be cleaned without the necessity7 for hand rubbing or like laborious operations.

A further object is to provide such machine in forms which may be cheaply manufactured, the parts of which are all of simple and durable nature.

These and other like objects are attainedl the device constructed according to the present invention.

In carrying out the invention, use is made of a tank, preferably made of wood and conical in shape, the walls 10 being encircled by tight metallic bands, 11, a similar but wider band 12, being provided at the base, in which is a tight fitting bottom 14, so arranged as to prevent the liquid used in the vtank from leaking.

A loosely fitting cover 15 surmounts the open top of the tank, the same having a depending element which extends into the interior and is further provided with an opening 16 through which articles to be washed may be enteredor removed.

An eye 23 is secured in the wall 10 of the tank, the same containing a link 24, the outer end of which is adapted to engage with a hook 25, rigidly set in the lever 56, by means of which the latter may be maintained in a substantially vertical position when not in use.

Supports 26 engage with the exterior of the tank 10, maintaining the same at any desirable height, the supports being held by screws or other like fastenings as may be preferred so as to hold the tank at a desirable height, convenient of access and ready for operation.

A pinion 30 is aiiixed to the lower end of a vertical shaft 31 mounted in bearings formed in a plate 18 and an extension 32, formed therewith, the shaft having rigidly secured upon it enlarged collars 33 and 34, respectively at its lower and upper ends, the collars rotating within a xed tube 35, engaged in the bottom 14 and extending centrally upward within the tank, the tube being galvanized or otherwise treated so as to be substantially non-corrodible, as are also the other metallic parts of the machine.

The upper end of the shaft 31 is formed rectangularly as indicated by the square 36, the same iitting a similarly shaped opening, formed in a hub, from which extend radial bars 40, terminating in hubs 41, and in which are rigidly extending arms 42, the length of the same being such as to clear the bottom 14 of the tank as they are caused to alternatingly rotate within.

The pinion 30 is given a semi-rotative movement by means of the rack 50, movable rectilinearly in xed guides 51 attached to the bottom of the tank, the rack having an extending head 52 carrying a pin 53, opera ble in a slot 54, formed in the lower enlarged end 55 of a hand lever 56, pivoted upon the pin 57, to a bracket 58 extending outward from the wall of the .tank and operable by moving to or from the tank in an obvious manner.

In operation, the tank being partially filled with water or any cleansing agent desired, the clothing is placed therein encir cling the tube 35, the hub with the radial bars 40 being secured to the squared portion 36 of the shaft 31, and the cover 15 placed in position, the washing is in condition to begin, which is accomplished by moving the hand lever 56 back and forth, thereby transmitting a reciprocatory rotary motion to the vertical shaft 31, thereby causing the arms 42 t'o engage with the clothing or the articles to be washed, causing the same to be moved within the tank so that the water or cleansing solution may be brought into intimate contact therewith.

When the Washing has been completed, the cover 15 is removed together with the cross-arms 40, whereupon the article washed may be raised from the tank and the water withdrawn.

From the foregoing it will be seen that a cheap and commodious device for washing articles has been disclosed, and that the same may be operated in a convenient manner without bending the body by merely swinging the lever to and fro in an easy manner.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-

Operating mechanism for Washing machines, comprising in combination, a tank, a hollow standard centrally arranged in said tank, a shaft rotatably engaged in-said hollow standard, a head carried thereby, a

pini-on affixed to said shaft below the tank, a toothed rack in engagement with said pinion, guides on said tank for said rack, a head on said rack carrying a pin, and a hand lever having a slotted, enlarged lower end, in the slot of which said pin is operating, a bracket projecting from the side of the tank to which said lever is pivotally secured intermediate its ends, a hook on said lever, and an eye on said tank adapted to be engaged by said hook for locking said lever in its inoperative position, said arms adapted to alternatingly rotate within the tank upon the operation of said lever, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
