PATENT OFFICE.
NEEDLE COMPANY, OF ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA.
TUBFING-NEEDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented F b 15 1921 Application filed March 1, 1920. Serial No. 362,294.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALVIN F. Crimsrorrrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Asheville, in the county of Buncombe and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Turfing-Needle, 01 which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in needles and more particularly to a turfing needle.
The object of the invention is to provide a needle which can be quickly threaded with cord or yarn and which may be adjusted to regulate the length of the stitch, in a quick and simple manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide a needle comprising a few simple parts capable of convenient assemblage or a displacement and which can be economically roduced.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved turfing needle;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 1 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal sectional view showing the manner of securing the needle in the gripping por tion or handle thereof.
Referring to the drawings in detail in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, my improved turfing needle is shown as comprising a handle member or gripping portion comprising an outer tubular member 10 open at one end and having the other end tapered or formed into a frustum of a cone as indicated at 11, the end portion being open. The tubular member 10 comprises the outer section adapted to receive an inner tubular member or section 12 which is open at one end treely like the section 10 and able holding means, 0
has the otherend formed at 13 correspondmg to the end 11 of the member 10.
he inner member is provided with a series of openings 14 arranged in a row near the open end thereof and mounted on the outer member, is pivoted clamping member 15 having extensions 16 pivoted as at 17 transversely on the outer member and intermediately oi? the ends of said clamping member or jaw. One arm of the clamping member forms a finger engaging portion 18 while the other arm is curved inwardly as shown at 19 to engage through an aperture 20 in the section 10 where it is held by a spring 61 positioned between the portion 18 and the outer member or section 10 so that the inner member may be held in adjusted position longitudinally oi the outer member when set therein.
The openings at the truncated ends of the sections 10 and 12 form a socket or chuck for receiving and holding any kind of needle, which may be forked, round, hollow or otherwise. The needle proper is indicated at 21 and has an opening 22 therein longitudinally from the latch end thereof to a point adjacent to the piercing end 23, where it opens into an aperture or eye 24. The opposite end of the needle is formed with a spring catch 25 extending toward the eye and having a lug 26 adapted to snap into a recess 27 in the inner face of the reduced portion 13 of the inner section, which inner section is provided with a longitudinal slot 28 therein throughout the length. thereof at a point 15 from the connecting means and openings heretofore described, the edge portions in the slot being turned inwardly to form flanges 29.
In the use of the device, the twine or yarn is laid through the slot, the needle be ing threaded through the eye, while the inner and outer sections are disengaged. With the needle held in position by a suitlamping means or chuck, as described, the inner section and needle are then engaged in the outer section through the open end thereof, the clamping member or latch this purpose from within the opening 20; the needle will then project from the handle or gripping portion latch, the inner section may be adjusted within the outer section so to vary the 15 being disengaged for and by reason of the y leading from the bore of the inner length of projection of the needle proper and thus regulate the length of the stitch. The-needle being threaded for use, it may be conveniently grasped and it may be as readily disassembled or disconnected as it can be assembled. f
aving thus described my invention What I claim is:
In a device of the class described, inner and outer tubular members telescoped for relative longitudinal adjustment, the inner member having a slot extended the full length thereof and communicating with the member, there being a lateral recess in the inner member, and the inner member having a longitudinal passage bore ofthe inner member a movable locking device on her and engaging the inner member to hold to the recess, the slot and the recess being closed by the outer member; a needle in the inner member; a spring tongue on the needle and provided With a lug adapted to traverse the passage and to seat in the recess; and
the outer memsaid members adjusted longitudinally with respect to each other.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto alilxed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
