Be it known that I, MATTHEW SMITH Moons, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, of 47 Broad street, Mile- End, Glasgow, Scotland, have invented new and useful Improvements in or Connected with Cutter- Chain Mining-Machines for Use in Mining Coal and other Minerals, of which the following is a specification.
This invention refers to improvements in or connected with cutter chain machines particularly adapted for use in mining coal and other minerals, of the type comprising a body part furnished with a motor and provided with a gear casing at thehead of the body part from which there extends a cutter chain member mounted capable of angular adjustment about an axis at right angles to the plane of the cutter chain memher, and in which the cutter chain thereof is driven by a sprocket wheel to which rotation is imparted through gearing contained within the gear casing by power derived fromthe motor in driving connection with a power shaft which extends into the gear casing.
To simplify explanations in the description and the claims it will be assumed that the machines each occupy a position in which the cutter chain is situated below the gear casing and that the plane of the cutter chain is horizontal for performing undercutting operations. I I
Machines according to this invention comprise a gear casing formed with aninternal circular channel at its base the axis of which channel is verticah'which gear casing is divided transversely in a plane containing the axis'of the channel and at right angles or thereabout to the power shaft of the motor, onepart of the gearcasing being permanently fixed to the body of the machine and the other part adapted to be detachably secured to the fixed part, a base structure hav ing a circular rim adapted to be mounted with its rim fitting within the channel of the gear casing, a chain driving sprocket wheel located below the base structure mounted xupon a driving axle extending through the 7 base structure, and a cutter chain member, the plane of which is below the basestructure, mounted capable of angular adjustment about a vertlcal axis situated in'the area contained within the circumference of the base structure.

In machines according to this invention the cutter chain member may be mounted capable of angular adjustment either about the vertical axis of the base structure or about a vertical axis situated between the center of the base structure and circumference thereof, and in both of these cases the chain driving sprocket wheel may be mounted coaxial with the axis about which the cutter chain member is mounted capable of angular adjustment, and in the first case the sprocket wheel may be otherwise mounted about an situatedbetween the center of the base structure and circumference thereof to which axisthe-movements of angularr adjustments are imparted. In some arrangements the base structure and the cutter chain member are RSSOCIEUIGCl to turn angularly together, in which case the rim of the base structure ismounted capable of angular movement in the internal channel of the gear casing, and in other arrangements the base structure is fixed against angular movement in the channel of the gear casing, in which case the cutter chain memher is mounted capable of angular adjustment about the axis of the base structure or about an axis located between the center of the base structureand rim thereof.
Some examples of construction according to this invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan of a cutter chain ma chine. Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5 are longitudinal vertical sections, eachillustrating a con struction to be described.
In the drawings A designates the body of i the machine, B the motor, anelectric motor for example, C the fixed part and C the detachable part of the gear casing, D the mternal channel formed at the base of the gear casing, the base structure, F the cutter structure E, is axially connected to rotate with a bevel gear'wheel L driven by a bevel pinion M provided on the power shaft K of the motor. In Fig. 3 the chain driving sprocket wheel H, which is mounted to ro tate about an axis located between the center of the base structure E and cii'cumference thereof, is axially connected to rotate with a toothed wheel N in gear with a pinion P which is axially connected to rotate with the bevel gear wheel L driven by the bevel pinion M.

It will be recognized that the base structure E is required to be placed in position with one half of thecirruniference of its rim fitting within the portion of the channel D formed in thelixed part-C of the gear casing before the detachable part 0 of the gear casing is applied. and secured to. the
fixed. part C. and in order to remove the base structure E the part C of the gear casing hasfirst to be detached.

A cutter chain machine comprising a body part, a motor, a gear casingat the head of thebody part, apower shaft'in driven connection with the motor extending into the gear casing, an internal circular channel formed at the base of the gear casing the axis of which channel is vertical, said gear casing being divided transversely'in a plane containing the axis of the channel and at right angles or thereabout to the power shaft of the motor, one part of the gear casing being permanently fixed to the body of the machine,-and' the other part adapted to be -'detachably secured to thefixe'd part, a base structure having a circular rim adapted to be mounted with .its rim fitting within the channel of the gear casing, a chain driving sprocket wheel located below the base struc- .the area contained within the circumference of the base structure.

A cutter chain machine comprising a body part, a motor, a gear casing at the head of the body part, a power shaft in driven connection with the motor extending into the gear casing, an internal circular channel formed at the base of the gear casing the axis of which channel is vertical, said gear casing being divided transversely in a plane containing the axis of the channel and at right angles or thereabout to the power shaft of the motor, one part of the gear casing being permanently fixed to the body of the machine and the other part adapted to be detachably secured to the fixed part, a base structure having a circular rim adapted to be mounted with its rim fitting within the channel of the gear casing, a chain driving sprocket wheel located below the base structure mounted upon a driving axle extending through the base structure, said driving axle being situated between. the center of the base structure and circumference thereof, a toothed wheel connected to rotate with the driving axle of the sprocket wheel, a pinion mounted to rotate about the axis of the base structure in gear with said toothed wheel, a gear wheel axially connected to rotate with said pinion, a driving pinion on the power shaft in mesh with said gear wheel, and a cutter chain member be low the base structure mounted capable of angular adjustment about a vertical axis situated in the area contained within the cir-- cumference of the base structure.
