Be it known that AUoUs'r J .KREUZKAMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illino1s, ful Improvements in Combined Knockdown Sliding Couches or Beds, of which the following is a specification.

It is an object of the invention to accomplish the foregoing by the provision of a structure which is simple in its construction, durable and rigid in use and which at the slime time is comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

Sliding couch beds with which I am familiar usually comprise a main section and a sliding section, the main section consisting of a s ring mattress permanently connected with t e head and foot, so that it is not prac- I tical for the user to disconnect the spring fabric from the head and foot in any ordinary way to permit the two spring fabrics to be disassembled from the head and foot for storage or other purposes and conse' quently it has been the practice to build the main section of the sliding couch bed with as small a head and foot as is possible thereby to decrease the weight of structure, since such a bed provided .with a fair sized head and foot would be too heavy to handle orto manipulate.

In the present improvement, however, by reason of the fact thatrboth spring fabrics may be readily detached from the head and foot, the bed may be made up of a suitable ornamental head and foo; of any desired size or style, since as the sp ing mattresses can Specification of Letters Patent.

both be removed therefrom, the handling of the structure is very much simplified and the weight of the head and foot is no longer a material factor to be considered.

In short, the object of the present improvement is to provide a sliding couch bed which will have more the appearance of an ordinary bed and less of the appearance of the ordinary couch without, however, increasing the weight of the structure necessary to be handled by theuser when it is desired to assemble the article.

This improved bed comprises a main section 1, and a sliding supplemental section 20. The main section comprises a head 2 and a .foot 3, each of which in the present instance consists of a pair of legs 4 connected by cross members 5 and 5', which in turn are suitably cured to its leg on the inside. As the pivotally connected swinging hooks carried at each side of the head andloot extend over or' into the framework forming the main mattress section comprising the side bars and cross bars to which the spring: 'lahric is permam-ntly connected and between which cross bars the fabric is stretched. these books act to wedge this main mattress section into tight engagement with the head and foot and so prevent any shale ing or wabbling joints. while at the same timion first releasing the hooks the lower pin and not h coni'iections act as pivots thereby to permit the head and foot to be swung away l'rom the main mattress section and its sliding ection or outward so that it is unnecessary to maintain the bead and toot in parallel relation with each other or with the ends oi the mattress sections in order to permit the ready dctzmhmcnt of the head and foot from said mattress sections.

From the foregoing it will he observed that the detachable mattress section of the main ection of the bed is connected with the head and foot at the bottom thereof relati'vely remote from the top by simple pin and slot connections and at the top by the swingginr hooks 7. which hook over the cross angle bars of the bed bottom or mattress sec-- tion and which bed bottom of course can be formed of any suitable material as metal or otherwise, whereby on raising the books the detachable spring: mattress section can be readily released from its pins by slightly swinging the head and foot and lifting each end from the head and foot respectively.

By means of the present improvement, one mattress section can be readily interchanged with the head'and foot of another without.

being specially fitted thereto, whereas it is usually necessary that the spring mattress bespecially fitted to its head and foot as they are not interchangeable.

In thepresent improvement. the spring mattress section is connected with the head and foot by two entirdy different kinds of connection, one of which is releasable prior to the other and one of which in the present instance is shown as a. pin and slot connection, and the other of which is shown as a shiftable or swinging, hook connection whereby on the mere lifting of the hook the spring mattress section or the spring mattress supports or side bars which carry such spring mattress may be readily detached from the foot and head without the ne essity of maintaining the head or the foot, as the case may be, and the spring mattress section in parallel juxtaposition so as to enable the mattress section to he slid upward and then removed. In other words. in the present improvement it will be observed that by merely first releasing or swinging the hook 7 away from the cross angle bars 8, the head or foot can be ,"wung away l'rom the mattress section to facilitate the lifting of the latter from the pins (5, wlu-reas it a pin and slot connection similar to that shown at 6 were substituted for the hook shown at 7, the result would be that in order to lift the mattress section. it would be necessary to slide the mattress section upwardly relatively to the head or the foot while maintaining the head and foot in parallel relation with th end of the mattress sc tion.a rathei dilli cult thing for one person to do with a heavy structure of this kind. especially as such pin and slot connections frequently stick or bind.

In the present improvement lnnvever. the hooks are shifted below the mattress section is handled and then the head or foot can be swungaway from the mattress section so that it is not m-ccssary to maintain it in parallel relation with the end of the mattress section in ordcr to disconnect the pin and notch connection. and this swinging movement of the h ar t'oot tends to loosen the pin and notch connection and o relieve any binding; or sticking action at this point. so that the mattress can be readily and easily lifted. in ordinary bcd stcads. the head and l oot are usually conne ted by side bars upon which is placed the spring mattress comprising a uitable l'raim-work. also includin; sidc bais for maintaining: the fabric stretched \\'ll(ll lll( mattress is rcmovcd from the bed structure.

in the present improvement however, it will be observed that the head and l'oot are unprovidcd with side bars, the only sidebars used being those forming a part of the sprin; mattress section. the location of which relatively to the mattress being such that the spring mattress section maintains the head and foot rigidly in position. lhus the cost of the structure is milterially lessened since a pair of side bars are done away with.

Located between the head and foot and carried by the side bars of the main mattrc sectmn are a pair of cross angle bars 1:: ip) ing tracks. each provided with a curred portion at one end as 16, to limit the movement of the rollers about to be described. The supplemental .or sliding section 2U comprises two end frames 21 and 22, each comprising a cross bar 23 and a leg 24. the legs being connected by a side bar 25 and suitably braced as at All. Stretched be tween the end frames is a metallic fabric or spring mattress or other suitable bed bottom tin 27 and this spring mattress is located between the side bar and the spring fabric or mattress of the main section. The inner side of this sliding section is provided with a pair of depending members 28 likewise connected by a lengthwise extending bar 29 and to these depending members is connected a pair of rollers supported on the upwardly curved ends of the tracks hereinbefore referred to. constituting a means for sufiiciently raising the inner side of the sliding section into substantial alinement with the main section so that the two spring fabrics will be practically level as well as a means for somewhat limiting movement of the sliding section when extended.

From the foregoing it will he observed that the present improvement comprises two mattress sections. one sliding relatively to the other. that onc sliding between the side bar and the fabric of one mattress sec tion and that both mattress sections are de tat-liable or removable from the head and foot of the main section. either separately or together as occasion may require, while the unitary sliding section is supported by the head and foot through the unitary main mattress section.

It will of course be understood that the various details may be more or less changed without departing from the spirit or scope of the present improvement.

I claim as my invention 1. A knock down hcd structure cou|prising a head and afoot and a pair of spring mattress sections, one a main section and the other a sliding section. both dctachably supported by the head and foot. the sliding section through the medium of the main mattress section, the sliding section having shi-ftahle movement relatively to the main section thereby to form a double bed.

2. A knock-down bcd structure comprising a head and a foot and a pair of spring mattress sections. one a main section and the other a sliding section, both detachably supported by the head and foot. the sliding section through the medium of the main mattress section, the sliding section having shiftable movement relative] to the main section thereby to form a doub e bed, and said sliding section also being detachable from said main section.

A knock-down bed structure comprising a head and a foot, and a pair of spring mattress sections. one a main section and the other a sliding section, both detachably supported by the head and foot, the sliding section through the medium of the main mattress section, the sliding section having shiftable movement relatively to the main section thereby to form a double bed, the sliding section lrakving a pair of legs at its outer side and a pair of rollers at its inner side and the main section having a. pair of tracks for the reception of said rollers.

4. A knock-down bed structure comprising a head and a foot, and a pair of spring mattress sections. one a main section and the other a sliding section, both detachably supported by the head and foot. the sliding section through the medium of the main mattress section, the sliding section having shiftable movement relatively to the main section thereby to form a double bed, the slidin, section having a pair of legs at its outer side and a pair of rollers at its inner side and the main section having a pair of tracks for the reception of said rollers and the main section having side bars between which and its fabric the fabric of the sliding se tion is located.

5. knock-down bed structurecomprising a head and a foot and a main mattress section including a stretched fabric detachably supported by said head and foot. and a sliding scctiou likewise including a stretched fabric and shiftablc relatively to the fabric of the main section one under the other to form a single or a double bed and supported by the head and foot through the medium solely of the main section.
