2 Claims.
The principal objects of this invention are to provide a bed couch having substantially the ordinary appearance but provided with a back for use as a couch during the day; to provide a 5 rest for this back at night when it is not used as a back, and to provide a simple and convenient way of holding the back rigidly in a vertical position and yet make it easily capable of being turned to the rear for supporting it at night.
l Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a front view of a preferred embodiment l of this invention shown in its daytime position;
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same;
Fig. 3 is also a side View with the back frame drawn out preparatory to being used for sleeping purposes;
Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the back turned down and supported by the back frame and with the spring shown moving intoits final position;
Fig. 5 is a similar View with the bed in its cornplete form open for sleeping purposes;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary plan of the couch for the same purpose but with the mattress removed;
Fig. '7 is a plan showing the two parts of the bed with the springs for both sections removed to illustrate the features at the bottom of the frame;
Fig. 8 is a side view on enlarged scale of the means for holding and releasing the back;
Fig. 9 is a side view like Fig. 2 showing a modification, having a wood back;
Fig. 10 is a side view of the back frame used in said modification showing in detail the way in which the end of the back is supported by it, and
Fig. 11 is a perspective view of the metal back frame.
For the purpose of this invention the bed couch is made to look very much like others of its type. It is provided with a main supporting frame Ill having casters I I by which it can be rolled around. It has a spring I2 on which is a mattress I3. When used as a couch during the day there is also a large thicker mattress I4 for the top of it.
On the ends are arranged upwardly projecting plates I5 in the same plane and, above the same, a pair of studs I6 on which can swing a back I'I. In the form shown in the rst ten gures, this is a metal back made of such shape and material as may be desired and preferably has a cross strip I 8 for strengthening purposes. This is flattened at the bottom at both ends and provided with a vertical slot I9 and also a wedge-shaped vertical notch 20 in the bottom for receiving the plate I5.
On account of the wedge shape of the notch it will come down on the plate I5 with a wedging fit and hold it firmly.
The parts are shown in Figs. 3 and 8 in full lines in the upright position of the back which is 5 employed for use as a couch in the day time. p
It will be seen that, by means of the parts I5,
I6, I9 and 2D, the back is held rigidly in an upright position. When the device is to be used for sleeping purposes this back has to be turned rear- 10 wardly. This is done by lifting it so that the bottoms of the slots I9 come into contact with the studs I8 and the notches 2i! are lifed up above the plates I5 so that the back can bev turned about the studs I6 to the dotted line position in Fig. 8. 15 At this end it is held up by the studs I6.
In addition to the above features, a rectangular wood back frame 22 is provided having casters 23 and a little narrower than the frame I0 so that it can be moved back into it. This back frame is 20 provided in its ends with recesses 24 for receiving the top of the back I'I. The back I'I lies outside the frame 22 and its top passes through these recesses. The back frame also has hinged to it at the rear a spring 25 which lies upon the back 25 frame when it is moved into the main frame. In Fig. 3 it is shown as just being moved back out of that frame.
After this spring 25 is raised the back I 'I is moved down, as shown in Fig. 4. Then the spring ;f frame 25 is moved back down upon this and supported on the edges of the frame 22. Now the mattress I4 is transferred over on this spring 25 and the upper surfaces of the mattresses I3 and I4 are on a level. The device is now in its form C.) for sleeping purposes, as shown in Fig. 5.
Under the springs I2 and at the top of the frame I0 are a series of connected angle irons 21 which together constitute a rectangular frame secured to the top of the frame I0. This frame supports 4Q the springs I2. To the front inside wall of the frame Iii and back frame 22 are pivoted rods 28 and 29 which cross the frame and cross each other. They have studs 30 which slide in slots 3I in irons on the frame IIJ and the back frame 22. 45
In Figs. 9 and 10 is shown a modification in which the back 32 is formed of a wooden frame and is provided with strengthening pieces 33. It is connected with the bed frame and operated in the same manner as described above. It has re- 50 cesses 24 for the wooden back 32 which is bent, as shown in Fig. 10.
In Fig, 11 the back frame 34 is of metal formed of angle irons 35 and flat pieces of metal secured together. The angle irons carry the casters. 55
In this way it will be seen that the device serves as a couch during the day and is provided with a back which eliminates the present necessity to use the wall of a room as a back and prevents the occupant from pushing the couch out away from the wall merely by leaning back. It also provides a space in the back frame in which the said back can be lodged when the device is being used as a bed. This is'a very simple arrangement for that purpose but is important in the use of this bed couch. The manipulations are very simple to change it from a couch to a. sleeping bed or vice versa and the outside appearance is practically the same as other bed couches except for the back. It involves no features that are especially expensive to manufacture and, in fact, is very simple to make and maintain, more so than other forms for the same purpose on the market.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof,- I do not wish to he limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is:
l, In a bed couch, the combination of a front bottom frame having an opening in the rear thereof, a back for said frame pivoted thereto, a lower back frame adapted to be telescoped into the bottom frame through said opening and having means in each of its ends for receiving said back when it is turned down flat, the ends of the hack then being outside the back frame, and a spring frame pivoted to the back of the back frame and adapted to lie over said back when it is lowered.
2. In a bed couch, the combination of a front bottom frame having an opening in the rear thereof, a back for said frame pivoted thereto, a lower back frame adapted to be telescoped into the bottom frame through said opening and having a recess in each of its ends for receiving said back when it is turned down flat and a spring frame pivoted to the back of the back frame and adapted to lie over the back when it is lowered.
