i IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,825, dated March 1S, 1873.

y Be it known that I, OLIVER B. EVANS, of
Titusville, Crawford county, Pennsylvania,-
have invented certainImprovements in Steam- Boilers for Laundry Purposes, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improvementin A a steam-boiler for laundry purposes, drawing of which I herewith furnish with the following to the cylinder a. Fig. 4, letters E E, arewings to be placed on the inside of boiler F. Fig. 5 is the reversed end of cylinder a. Fig. 6 is the bottom of cover S. Fig. 7 Sis boiler F and cylinder a combined. Fig. 8, letters o c, are posts on which I rest the journals D D.
I combine my invention with boiler F by placing cylinder a with an opening on one side to receive the clothes, and inclose the same by the movable cover G, which cylinder I turn with crank b soas to displace the clothes, that all parts may receive the steam equally, and also an equal amount of friction from the `corrugated sides of 'the cylinder a. I hold the cylinder in place by resting the journals D D at each end on the top of two posts, c c, placed and fastened on the inside of boiler F, with aange or cap on the journal D to prevent a lateral movement. The jourin keeping the steam equal on all sides of the cylinder; also to serve as conductors to return the condensed steam to the bottom of the boiler F. The cover S I construct with a concave top, into which I place cold water to condense` the steam that arises above the cylinder a. I allow the sides ofthe cover S to pass over the outside of the boiler F and fasten with a catch, which is attached to the end of the boiler.`
This arrangement is to prevent the cover from rising by the pressure of the steam.
I add liquid ammonia and chlorine to the water in the boiler F to assist in bleaching.A
