DANIEL W. STATEN, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
GAS-BURNER.
Application filed February 1G, 1920.
To all 'whom it' may concern:
Be it known that l, DANIEL Vv?. STATEN, a oitizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, hef-.fe invented new and useful improvements in Gas-Burners, oi which the following is a specilication. A
ri`his invention relates to gas burners and has for its object to provide a simple, substantial and inexpensive burner adapted to be readily mounted inside of a small stove of any suitable character, and the invention consists of the construction, the combination and in details and arrangements of the parts, an embodiment ot which invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described and claimed herein.
liigure 1 is a perspective of an air tight wood stove to which the invention is shown as applied.
Fig. 2 is a central sectional view through the burner.
F ig. 3 is a perspective of the detached burner nozzle or head.
One ot the objects of the invention is to provide improvements in gas burners so as to regulate the deflection of the flame issuing from the burner, and to that end the invention is shown as comprising an elbow part 2 having the usual internal threads 3 at one end and at the opposite end threads Il into which fit a mixture pipe 5 into which a supply ot gas and air may be admitted and regulated. as for instance, by a gas valve 6 and an air inlet 7. rl`he improved burner is shown as arranged within the stove S at a suitable height below its bottom.
The burner head or nozzle comprises a tubular member 10 having its lower end externally threaded as at 12 to t into the threads 8 in the upper end of the elbow 2, and the upper portion of the burner member 10 is longitudinally slitted and the tongue portions 11 are bent outwardly to form an inverted 'frustum of a cone or spreading end in the burner part 10.
In the construction of my improved burner head or nozzle the upper portion ot the tubular member l0 is slotted so that the tongue portions are substantially equal in width throughout their lengths and when their upper portions are bent outwardly the spaces between said tongues are in the form of elongated V-shaped openings. By virtue Specification of Letters Patent.

serial No. 359,124.
of this construction the gas or combustible mixture passing upwardly through the tubular member 10 to the point of combustion gradually and uniformly flows upwardly and outwardly, thereby forming a relatively large zone of combustion.
There is adjustably mounted on the threads l2 of the member l0 a collar or bracket member 13 through which are passed bolts 14 or other suitable means to secure to the part 13 the upwardly extending brackets or legs 15 which have on their upper ends a removable deiector 16 secured as by means of bolts 17 to inturned ends on the legs 15,
In the operation oit the burner the combustible mixture is ignited at the spreading outlet 1l and the detlecting plate 16 is ver tically adjusted as may be required to control the distribution of the flame by turning its carrying collar 13 on the threaded part of the member 10.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A gas burner comprising a fuel mixture supplying means, a threaded burner nozzle member mounted in an upright position on said means, a plurality of straight tongues projecting upwardly and outwardly from the upper end of said nozzle, and a detlecting plate mounted on the nozzle member and adapted to be vertically adjusted relative thereto. l
2. In a gas burner, the combination with a supply mixture means, of a nozzle member mounted thereon; the upper end or' the nozzle member being slitted to form an annular series of straight tongues that areI bent to form an inverted irustum of a cone, and a horizontally disposed flat detlecting plate mounted on the nozzle member.
3. In a gas burner, an externally threaded tubular outlet, a plurality of straight tongues formed integral with and projecting upwardly and outwardly from said tubular outlet, a collar mounted on the threads thereof to be longitudinaly adjusted above the said member, bracket arms provided on the collar, and a delecting plate provided on the upper ends of the said arms so as to be moved therewith toward or from the outlet of the burner.
4. In a gas burner, the combination with a supply pipe of an externally threaded member ad1|ustably connected to the supply pipe, the upper portion of said externally threaded member being slotted lengthwise to form a plurality of straight tongues, the upper portions of which are bent outwardly to form a gas spreading nozzle, a plate screwseated on the tubular member, arms projecting upwardly from said plate, and a l0 horizontally disposed defleeting plate qsupported by said arms.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speeilication.V
